In a vast, sprawling, and magical open world, there’s no shortage of quests and deep character moments inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which offers some of the best side quests in the series, all leading to valuable rewards, emotional payoffs, and meaningful storytelling.
A perfect example of such a side quest is ‘When Words Won’t Do,’ which has Cloud and company deliver a hefty sum of Gil to her son, who left the nest to be independent, culminating in a personal and emotionally deep payoff that is satisfying and worthy of the efforts it takes to complete.
When Words Won’t Do Overview
Before you can begin the side quest ‘When Words Won’t Do,’ you will first have tocomplete the Terror of the Deep boss encounterand thensleep at the Inn.After the cutscene involving Roche, you can thenspeak with Rhonda just outside of the Innto accept the quest.
After speaking with Rhonda, she will tell you tofollow her dog, Salmon, to the Crow’s Nestto deliver a substantial sum of Gil to her son. But, as you may have guessed,dangerous monsters will impede your progress along the way.You must protect Salmon and reach the Crow’s Nest to complete the quest.
So, when you’re ready to begin the side quest,fast-travel to the Angler’s Stowagewaypoint on your map,interact with Salmon,and select ‘Yes’ during the ‘Follow Salmon?’ prompt to start your journey to the Crow’s Nest!
When Words Won’t Do Walkthrough
Upon agreeing to follow Salmon, he will dart off toward the Crow’s Nest, covering a great deal of distance before running into the first group of enemies. Thegroups of enemies will start off as moderately weak, slowly becoming more and more challengingas you get closer to your destination.

Yourfirst combat encounteron your way to the Crow’s Nest will be againsttwo Fleetwings,which can be a bit tricky to deal with if you aren’t prepared. But fear not; the table below has everything you need on how to best them in combat!
When Words Won’t Do: Combat Encounter Two
After you defeat the previous groups of enemies, you willfollow Salmon quite a ways furtherbefore bumping into aZemzelett and Cappawire duo,a decent step above the previous competition. However, with knowledge of how to exploit their Weaknesses, you will have them defeated in no time!
How To Stagger
During its Wingbeat attack, dealing lots of damage to the Zemzelett will Pressure it considerably.
When Words Won’t Do: Combat Encounter Three
Following the previous combat encounter, you willcontinue tailing Salmonto the Crow’s Nest, covering a great amount of distance before running intotwo Zemzeletts.And fortunately for you, they arehandled the same way as earlier!
When Words Won’t Do: Combat Encounter Four
Defeating the two Zemzeletts will haveSalmon push further toward the Crow’s Nest,which will be shortly interrupted bythree Cappawires.Again, much like the Zemzeletts, these will behandled the same exact way as when you fought them earlierin your encounter!
When Words Won’t Do: Combat Encounter Five
Now it’s time for the real challenge of this side quest. As younear the finish line toward the Crow’s Nest,you will be ambushed bytwo Sandstorm Drakes.A completely new enemy type that will give you a run for your money if you aren’t prepared for them.
We alsostrongly urge using your Assess Materiaon these enemies, as you willlikely not encounter them for the remainder of your journey.Anyway, the table below will have all the proper information on how to get the best of them in combat!
The Sandstorm Drake will shroud itself with a protective Aura that produces Tornadoes when struck. Destroying its Aura will pressure them substantially, and attacking the Sandstorm Drake’s Aura from behind won’t create Tornadoes.
Mission Complete
Withall enemy checkpoints cleared, Salmon will lead you the rest of the way to the Crow’s Nestwithout any issues, bringing you directly to Dillan, Rhonda’s son. From here on out, there will benothing but dialogue, culminating with Cloud and company being invited further into the Crow’s Nest,unlocking more Quest opportunities.
Completing this quest will alsodeepen Cloud’s bond with Barretand grant you10 Party EXPand500 EXP.You will also obtain theSharphooter’s Companion Vol. 1,providingBarretwith+10 SP.Thus, concluding the When Words Won’t Do side quest!
