There are over 60 classes of warriors that can be brought into the Liberation Army inUnicorn Overlord. All of them have strengths to overcome and weaknesses to consider when organizing your units. Some units do their best work in the front rows while others can do their best supporting in the back row.

Knowing the specialties of each unit when creating your formations can help you bring out their strengths in battle while also covering their weaknesses. Strategizing in this way can change the tide of battle and turn an impossible battle into a smooth engagement.

Hoplites are perfect for fortifying the frontlines. Their defensive shields can resist all but the mightiest blows from the Warriors and Breakers. They can even be directed to protect flying units from arrows and bolts. Hoplites are best deployed as the defensive shield of archer units in the back row, along with drawing attacks away from allies in their rows.

Hoplites can be promoted to Legionnaires, which take the already formidable defenses and vitality of the Hoplites and expand on it. Not only do they have higher defenses for themselves, they can also cast wide-scale protection for allies around them.

Gladiators are tough, imposing figures with large cleaving axes and a tenacious attitude to go with them. Their attacks are fierce and can pack a mighty punch. Their health is also pretty large in comparison to other classes in their level. They do their best damage with full or almost full health.

Gladiators can be promoted to being Berserkers, which gives them more access to powerful attacks that can clear large areas. This all-around attack can also have increased accuracy if boosted by witches, ensuring maximum damage.

Calvary, Magic Units

Formidable infantry with a massive slab of concrete for a weapon. Warriors can bash through the protection of a Hoplite, take unarmored infantry down a notch, and smash apart shielded cavalry while still being agile enough for a chance to dodge some attacks.

Outside of battle, Warriors can be used for dismantling barricades andfixing broken bridges, making navigation on the map easier and simpler. Most units just bounce back from the barricades. Warriors, on the other hand, can either damage them much faster or use valor points to smash all the barricades at once.

Strong against infantry units, the knight cavalry you can recruit is a staple part of a decent unit. If you have a knight-class character as the leader of a unit, you can navigate the battlefield much faster on the road. Knights can grow to develop abilities and attacks that can annihilate the whole roles of enemies with several attacks.

Great Knights are the promoted upgrades of the regular knights and have several upgraded abilities and skills, along with boosting the attack power of any other cavalry units in the row with them before lunging in with their attacks.

Sellswords and their promotions, Landsknechts, are specialists in devastating counter-attacks, whether it’s themselves or their allies being attacked. They also gain an additional striking opportunity if they can bring down their target in one blow of the attack.

Outside of battle, they have a valor ability to summon small legions of non-controllable troops that can target the closest enemy units and automatically go through the battle sequences. This is pretty good if your current unit layouts are running out of advantages and need that extra push without any real cost to your units.

Greater garrison

Ranged units, Flying units

The Swordfighters are melee units that are all about speed and taking down lightly armored enemies swiftly. Along with having a skill to bypass the evasion of units like thieves, they also have the parry skill, which negates melee damage to the fighter and grants them one additional action to use.

If they defeat the target with one hit afterward, they gain another chance to parry, allowing the cycle to continue. Both the Swordfighter, and the Swordmaster, their promotion, have access to this very useful skill that pairs well against most melee units, with their weaknesses being opponents that can bypass these advantages.

Hoplites, Fighters, Calvary

These guys are the all-around handy ranged units of the Liberation. Keeping at least one highly leveled Hunter in your units can help pick off enemies that have a guarantee of avoiding multiple attacks. Archers are initially handy at taking on thieves, but are also effective against Gryphon Riders, Swordfighters, and are a good alternative against Wyvern Knights if you don’t have Elven Archers yet.

The Sniper is a promoted Hunter that takes many of their passive advantages and brings them up, ensuring that every evasive enemy in the battle will get an arrow of critical damage. Out in the field, having a Hunter or Sniper as the leader of a unit can be handy as backup for another unit in battle, adding additional damage through ranged assistance.

Calvary, most Infantry units

Your first offensive Magic units to encounter and recruit in the game, Wizards use mainly fire spells that rapid fire and cause multiple points of damage. Hoplites and Legionnaires are very susceptible to magical attacks, so Wizards are perfect at taking them down and providing other advantages in the back row.

Warlocks have a bigger opportunity of using larger attacks that are effective. Like Hunters, Wizards, and Warlocks, when they’re leaders, they can apply magical attacks that assist in the beginning of battles. They also pair well with Witches, who have skills that can increase the accuracy of magical attacks.

Can debuff whole rows of units

Clerics can undo their debuffs.

Shamans can change the entire flow of a fight. By the time you get to the point of the game where you explore Drakenhold, you are more likely to recruit and fight several shamans. Their curses debuff the attack strength of melee units. Without a cleric in your unit or Elven warriors who can cast immunity on your team, the result will leave your strongest units unable to cause any significant damage to any opponent.

With gladiators and Hoplites in the front row and Shamans in the back row, battles can be broken down into battles of attrition. Druids can add defensive curses to their already robust arsenal. Having one in your team during tougher battles can be the difference between victory or defeat,

Calvary and Light Infantry

Archer

Flying riders of majestic Gryphons, these ladies are extremely effective on cavalry units in the front rows. There are many moments during battles with the empire where a full line of cavalry units is charging at you. The reason why this is very easy to exploit is that Gryphon Knights can sweep over them and wipe out the battalion in one strike.

They are equally weak to Swordmasters in both ways due to the two classes having skills to counter each other. The Gryphon Masters add skills that can take down armored enemies as well, which gives this class a well-rounded advantage against melee targets. Archer classes are very dangerous for Gryphon Knights, so having some protection for them will help ensure they stay safe and effective in combat.
