Warner Bros. Discoveryhad the best-selling game of 2023 with Hogwarts Legacy, but apparently, this isn’t good enough. Following the troubled launch ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, WBD now feels that the triple-A gaming space is too “volatile”, and will move to making live service mobile games instead.
This comes from the boss of WBD’s streaming and gaming division, J.B. Perrette, who made these comments at a conference talk (as reported byGameSpot). Here, Perrette explains that the company has big plans for its various IPs - which include Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and DC - but we shouldn’t expect these plans to include single-player games.
“Rather than just launching a one-and-done console game, how do we develop a game around, for example, a Hogwarts Legacy or Harry Potter, that is a live service where people can live and work and build and play in that world in an ongoing basis?” says Perrette.
Of course, Suicide Squad already has live service elements - something that many fans weren’t pleased with as soon as it was revealed. But with Suicide Squadalready “falling short” in WBD’s eyes, then Perrette’s comments likely mean that we’ll see more free-to-play mobile games, as opposed to premium console games that include battle passes and other microtransactions.
Warner Bros. Discovery was quick to dismiss Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, as its first season hasn’t even started yet. It’s set to kick off on March 28.
“We’re doubling down on games as an area where we think there is a lot more growth opportunity that we can tap into with the IP that we have and some of the capabilities we have on the studio where we’re uniquely positioned as both a publisher and a developer of games.”
Perrette’s comments come amid mounting fears that triple-A gaming is becoming unsustainable. Indeed, if a company as large as Warner Bros. Discovery is throwing in the towel after one disappointment - directly after publishing the best-selling game of the year - it’s a grim indictment of the industry.
We’ll have to wait and see what this means for the other premium console and PC games that WBD publishes. Right now,Mortal Kombat 1is still receiving updates and has plans for more additions to the roster. It remains to be seen if this can still fit in with WBD’s new gaming strategy.
