Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas “fallen short” ofWarner Bros. Discovery’s expectations. Due to this, the company says that it has a “tough year” ahead, making up for Suicide Squad’s underwhelming sales.

This comes from comments made by WB Discovery’s chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels in a financial call, as reported byIGN. While Wiedenfels doesn’t give an exact figure for Suicide Squad’s sales, it’s clearly below what the company was anticipating, putting the future of the live service in question.

Right now, there are four seasons of content planned for Suicide Squad, including new playable characters and even a return to Arkham Asylum. The latter will be added in the first season as well as a playable Joker, coming sometime next month.

However, if Warner Bros. isn’t happy with Suicide Squad’s sales, it’s not clear how long it will allow developerRocksteadyto support the game. Being a live service, it’s possible that it could either make a comeback or make enough revenue through its microtransactions. But right now, with Warner Bros. referring to the “tough year” ahead, it doesn’t seem that the publisher is holding out hope that this will be the case.

Suicide Squad wasn’t met with a particularly positive reception by either fans or critics when it launched earlier this month. It’s sitting at a 60 on Metacritic right now, with a user score of 3.7/10. Less than a month since launch, many players seem to have bounced off the game too, withthe total player count dipping below 1,000 on Steam. This is a significant fall from its all-time high of 13,459 players at once. Now, its 24-hour player peak is 888.

In our review, TheGamer’s editor-in-chief Stacey Henley gave Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League a 2.5/5. She praised the character writing and one of the boss battles, but said that, overall, the experience is brought down by its gameplay and wider story.

It remains to be seen if Warner Bros. decides to try and push Suicide Squad again later in the year. Right now though, the game is still being sold for the full $70, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It launched on February 2, and is set to get its first seasonal content update in March.
