2024 has been a busy year already for great games that promise to occupy a lot of your time, and there’s no sign of that trend letting up anytime soon. Studios need to find ways to make their games stand out over others, and calling your gameUnicorn Overlordwill certainly do that. The tactical RPG’s gorgeous 2D design is typical of Vanillaware, and its director Takafumi Noma has promised this is the biggest project the studio has ever undertaken. Beginning work on Unicon Overlord in 2014, its release comes after a decade of work. Confirmation that this may well be Vanillaware’s crown jewel and that it will be another game that will comfortably take tens of hours of your time if you let it. It really wouldn’t be an RPG worth its salt if it didn’t.

When it comes to editions, there are two to choose from. If you want the game and nothing more, then there’s the Standard Edition. Available physically and digitally on all platforms, and the pre-order bonus comes with it regardless of platform. For anyone who has been waiting for Unicorn Overlord for a very long time and wants to go all in on the RPG when it arrives, there’s the Collector’s Edition.
There’s also a digital-only Monarch Edition of the game which includes digital copies of its soundtrack and art book. This can only be bought through thePlayStation Store,Xbox Games Store, andNintendo eShop.
As well as a copy of the game and its pre-order bonus, Unicorn Overlord’s Collector’s Edition also comes with an album featuring the game’s 16-bit music, and a 132-page art book. Worth noting both of those items are physical things and not digital versions as is often the case with some more expensive editions of games. The best inclusion of all with the Collector’s Edition though is a Unicorn Overlord card game. 239 cards included and made for up to four players.
