If you’ve been playingTerrariafor a while now, the nerf to the Reaver Shark’s pickaxe power, dropping from 100 to 59, was a sad day; no more early-game Hellstone ore. Despite this, fishing remains a valuable and viable strategy to getting useful resources, weapons, tools, and gear.
While there are plenty of cool items to get from a fishing rod alone, like the Scaly Truffle, Bottomless Lava Bucket, or Bladetongue, your main focus should be on crates, especially if you’ve made it to Hardmode, since the loot pools are so large, valuable, and change depending on your world stage.
8Strive For The Best Fishing Rod Possible
This is an obvious tip, but it applies nonetheless because the higher your fishing power, the greater chance you’ll have of getting a crate, which on average, tends to be a ten percent chance every time you cast your line into the water.
Whilethe best fishing rodsare locked behind the Angler NPCs quests, you can still buy the Sitting Duck’s Fishing Pole, which has a respectable 40 percent fishing power, from the Traveling Merchant for 35 gold if he has it in stock.
7Do Those Dang Fishing Quests
Did you know the Angler quests offer more than just a 0.4 percent chance of getting the Golden Fishing Rod? If you’re having trouble getting more crates, grind some fishing quests to get gear and accessories that boost fishing power or offer other benefits, such as:
There are, of course, other rewards that the Angler can give you, but these are the staple items and accessories you should prioritize first.
6Fish In Larger Bodies Of Water
While there’s a surprising number of factors that contribute to your overall fishing power, one important thing to remember is to choose bodies of water that are large enough, at least 300 tiles large to be specific, to avoid any unnecessary penalties.
The smaller the body of water you’re fishing in, the higher the penalty gets for your fishing power. If you’re getting little to no crates, or even worse, little to no fish over a significant period of time, try a different fishing spot, or create your own.
5If Possible, Fish In The Default Forest Biome
Unless the Eye of Cthulhu decides to make a surprise visit,or a particularly tough world eventcomes out of nowhere, the regular forest biome that everyone spawns in tends to be the safest, so you might as well fish there for an optimal, uninterrupted experience.
Though, this tip doesn’t apply if you’re looking for any biome-specific items, like the Inner Tube or the Lavaproof Fishing Hook, which would require you to fish in the ocean or a lake of lava, respectively. In these instances, solid blocks are your friends.
4When You Fish Matters
Another variable that affects your fishing power is simply when you decide to go fishing. For the highest bonus possible, you can fish between the in-game times of either 4:30 to 6:00 am, or 6:00 to 7:30 pm for a 20 percent boost to fishing power.
Also, if you notice there’s a full moon out or it’s raining, that’s a good time to get fishing, since these events add ten and 20 percent bonuses to fishing power respectively. It helps, of course, to have accessories that provide world information, like weather conditions, time, and moon phases.
3Use Chum Buckets If You Have Them
If you’ve just survived a Blood Moon event, you might notice you’ve picked up some Chum Buckets, consumable items dropped at a 50 percent chance by all kinds of enemies, like Hemogoblin Sharks, Blood Eels, Zombie Mermen, Dreadnautilus, and more.
Make sure you hang on to any Chum Buckets you get, since they can be used to increase your fishing power on any body of water. Just make sure you don’t use more than three at a time, since the bonus stops there, providing 20 extra fishing power.
2Open Your Crates In Hardmode
While it’s certainly not a sin to open any of the crates you’ve fished up in pre-Hardmode, it’s oftentimes worth it to be patient and open any crates you’ve accumulatedafterdefeating the Wall of Flesh, since Hardmode inevitably changes loot pools and tables.
To give an example, the difference between opening a crate in pre-Hardmode versus Hardmode could be the difference between getting a few Silver or Gold Bars, or getting Mythril or Orichalcum Bars. Heck, you might even be lucky enough to get an Enchanted Sundial if you’re patient.
1Drink Crate Potions
The number one thing you can do to guarantee more crates, more often, is by making and drinking Crate Potions as much as possible. To put things into perspective, a Crate Potion increases your average chance of fishing up a crate from 10 percent to 25 percent.
While this potion does require a lot of ingredients, like Amber, Shiverthorn, Waterleaf, and Moonglow, the buff it grants lasts four minutes, which is plenty of time to get at least a few crates. While Amber is more of a pain,at least the rest of the ingredients can be farmed.
