Summary
Being an Overseer can be tough work, especially when it comes to designing the perfect Vault for your dwellers. But that’s exactly what you’re tasked with doing inFallout Shelter. Sure, some might say increasing the happiness of your people is important too, but productivity and efficiency are top priorities when facing the uncertainty of the future!
But when you open the game for the first time or create a new Vault, you are given the basics in a tutorial, but not how to actually craft your underground sanctuary. So, let these tips be your guide to a safer and happier Vault.

10First Floor Buffer
As you progress through the game, you will face attacks from the outside. Whether this takes the form of Raiders trying to get inside, or even Deathclaws breaking down your Vault door, having a buffer to give you time to prepare your defenses can save you major heartbreak.
Have your first Living Quarters and Storage Room buildings taking up all the space on your first floor. Enemies will still explore these rooms briefly before realizing no one is there and moving to the next space. That gives you time to drag dwellers to where you need them, as well as gives them time to get there.

Want to knock out enemies quickly? Have two dwellers positioned at your Vault door with the best weapons you have.
9The Power Of Three’s
In Fallout Shelter, most rooms can be combinedin three’s. This means that instead of having lots of little rooms that can only have two dwellers at one time can instead turn into massive spaces where six dwellers can work, train, or gather together.
For your first resource production rooms, place three of the same buildings together. You may not be able to afford to complete these rooms right away, but you’ll be in good shape once you may.

8Straight Elevator Shafts
As you expand your Vault, you will have to build elevators to help you move further underground. Building long rows of elevators will be one amazing asset as you expand and grow your population.
Why? Dweller speed. In an emergency, you may have to shift dwellers from their work to fighting whatever crisis is going on. But they run pretty slow. If you have elevators that are jagged, this will add to the time it takes for help to arrive. Plus, it just looks nice.

7The Training Block
Once you’ve unlocked the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. training rooms, it can greatly help you increase the skills of your dwellers, especially those at level one. But where to put all those rooms?
Have them in a “block.” That’s to say, have them all close together. This makes leveling their skills up slightly faster because you may quickly tap everyone without moving all around your Vault. Bonus points if you have them to the right so they are furthest from the Vault door.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. refers to the skills that dwellers can learn and have. Strength, perception, endurance, intelligence, agility, and luck.
6Building By S.P.E.C.I.A.L.
Alternatively, you can build with a certain skill in mind. Strength is needed for Power Plants. Once you unlock the training room for the Strength skill, one way to avoid confusion as your Vault grows is to build the corresponding resource and training rooms close to each other.
That also allows you to quickly move your trained dwellers to the room they are most needed in. This can help you cycle out those who have a high amount of Strength (in this particular example) with those who are working in that room who aren’t very strong.

5Power, Power, Power
Speaking of power, as you grow your Vault, you will need more of every resource naturally. But the more rooms you have, the more power you burn through.
When building, keep your eyes on what your power requirement is. You don’t need to build a Power Plant or Nuclear Reactor at every level, but having these buildings on every other level will help your Vault stay up and running.

If you run low on power, your Vault will start shutting down. The rooms furthest from the Power Plants or Nuclear Generators will cease production first.
4Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade
When you’re first unlocking new rooms, it may be your first instinct to rush and build them. But it may be best to hold off for a bit and upgrade your current rooms instead.
One, it looks nice. But, of course, that’s not the main reason why. The main reason is that you’ll find that you are running short on trained dwellers to properly man these rooms. You’ll be using more power but taking more time to gather any resources. Ultimately, you’ll be running out of power, food, and water.

3Easy Collecting
Do you have a Mr. Handy…handy? There’s a way to ensure they are collecting the most vital resources as efficiently as possible.
Have one floor with large power, water, and food-generating buildings. This will make it so that, even when you are distracted by emergencies, placing and moving dwellers, or starting other tasks around your Vault, there is always a steady supply of resources being collected.

2Scientists Who Stick Together
Not terribly long after you start your new Vault, you will unlock the Medbay and the Science Lab. These will generateStimpaks and RadAways.
Place these rooms near each other. Not only will it make collecting these items easy, but it will also be helpful when assigning dwellers, as you know that this is where your dwellers with high Intelligence should go.

1Micro-Managing Pregnancy
This may not sound like a layout tip, but it is and can be so helpful in your attempt to grow the population in your Vault. When women become pregnant in the game, they will run from emergencies. But this can leave rooms defenseless if you aren’t careful.
When you want to expand your population, don’t have more than one pregnant dweller in a room at a time. This will help ensure that anytime there is an attack or fire, there are enough people around to deal with the problem quickly.
