Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, unarguably the worst game in the Jak series, is somehow being re-released onPlayStationPlus before Daxter, a PSP classic that fans have been begging to see make a return.
PlayStation and Naughty Dog have been so unbearably quiet about the Jak and Daxter series for so long now that any kind of update or acknowledgement of the series, no matter how small, is usually a good reason to celebrate. That’s not the case with what’s just been revealed, though, as it’s more confusing than anything else.Yes, even more confusing than the live-action movie in the works.
Yesterday, PlayStation announced all of thegames that are coming to PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Plus Premium this month over on the PlayStation Blog. That’s a lot of PlayStation to wrap your head around, but all you really need to know is that one of the more surprising additions to the service is Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, which is being added as a PSP classic on March 19.
Although this re-release of The Lost Frontier is likely going to be the best version since it introduces up-rendering, rewinds, quick save, and custom video filters, it doesn’t stop it from being considered the worst Jak and Daxter game. The first three games are all beloved PS2 classics and Jak X has a pretty loving fanbase despite being very different from the classic trilogy,while The Lost Frontier is generally regarded as the one to forget.
The Lost Frontier making it onto PlayStation Plus would normally just get a shrug from most Jak and Daxter fans who already know its reputation, but the whole situation is made more confusing because ofanotherPSP entry in the series - Daxter. Unlike The Lost Frontier, Daxter is generally loved by fans and is something that they’ve been wanting to see return for decades now.
I’m a pretty big Jak and Daxter fan and, although the hate for it is a little overblown, The Lost Frontier is easily the low-point of the series. At least it has some interesting ideas, right?
That is something that has sadly never happened, though, as PlayStation has left Daxter to rot on the PSP since it originally released in 2006.As you can see from this post on the Jak and Daxter subreddit, this has already been a point of contention for the community for some time,but is something that’s gotten worse now that theotherPSP Jak game has been ported over the PS4 and PS5.
Every comment about The Lost Frontier on the subreddit is either pointing out how disappointing the game is or wondering where the heck Daxter is if PSP Jak games are on the re-release table.Perhaps my favourite reaction to the news comes from Redditor ihappentobenick, who said, “It feels like I just got kicked in the b**ls”.
