The MacLean family are dwellers of Vault 33 among an idealistic and good-natured community of people until a tragedy befalls them and its members get split apart. But things are not what they seem with this family and lots of things unravel for the characters.

Spoilers for the Fallout TV show ahead!

Who Is Hank MacLean?

The patriarch of the MacLean family is alsoVault 33’s Overseer. Hank MacLean is a family man who raises a daughter and son while making sure things are running smoothlyand every dweller is happy in Vault 33.

Hank MacLean turns out to bethe main antagonist of the Fallout show. He has a dark past, and it’s all tied to Vault-Tec and theexperiment that’s being run in the interconnected system between Vaults 31, 32, and 33.

He’san Overseer with a hidden agendaand keeping a giant secret from his children and the rest of the Vault. That secret ishe was an employee of Vault-Tec before the Great War, working as an assistant to executive Barb Howard.

As Cooper Howard said himself about Hank, he’d be the one to fetch her dry cleaning.

As part of the ‘Bud’s Buds’ project, Hank was one of many working at Vault-Tec chosen for what was perceived as having superior genetics to becryogenically frozen in Vault 31and released over the centuries to assume duties as an Overseer.

He remained so loyal to Vault-Tec that to preserve ‘Bud’s Buds’ and keep instilling the idea that the Vault Dwellers would be the first to reclaim the surface,he nuked the capital of the New California Republic, a community known as Shady Sands.

At the end of the season, he doesn’t return to Vault 33 when freed, instead flying away in his Brotherhood of Steel Power Armorto land in New Vegas, with some unfinished business seemingly awaiting him there.

Who Is Lucy MacLean?

Lucy MacLean is the main hero of the Fallout TV show. She’s a survivor of her own wedding massacre carried out by Raiders under the NCR’s leader Lee Moldaver, and she’s on a quest to rescue her father from them.

Before the tragic wedding day, she wasa pillar of the Vault 33 community, involved in gymnastics, fencing, science projects, and teaching the Vault’s children American history, who we never hear from again. She’s a kind and caring young woman about to face the harsh realities of the wasteland.

While outside, she encounters Dr. Siggi Wilzig from the Enclave, who’s important to Lee Moldaver for the object in his head. She’ll quite literally need to remove his head and carry it with her to take it to Lee in exchange for her father, butshe eventually loses it and must recover it.

Along the way,she crosses paths with Maximus, a false Knight of the Brotherhood of Steel who becomes her main companion throughout the season and whom she develops feelings towards.

Then there’s also The Ghoul, a more villainous figure toward Lucy, only out for Wilzig’s bounty and even giving Lucy to have her organs harvested by a Mr. Handy unit as a trade for some RadAway.

When Lucy finds out the truth about her mother and what her dad did to Shady Sands, she forces Hank to give up the access code to Lee (a number that’s a bit of an Easter egg), whichactivates the Cold Fusion device at the Observatory and powers up the land.

When everything comes to light about her dad, and she sees what became of her mom, there is no more love between them. In the end,she tags along with The Ghouland his dog companion Dogmeatto wherever the wasteland takes them.

Who Is Norm MacLean?

Norm is Lucy’s younger brother and son of Overseer Hank MacLean. Even though he doesn’t join his sister in the search for their dad, his role inside Vault 33 during the events of the show is equally crucial.

Norm is the definition of ‘curiosity killed the cat,’ and is basicallyon the hunt to figure out what really went wrong in Vault 32, why they were lied to, and what those disturbing deaths really mean.

In his investigation, he discovers that Lee Moldaver used his mother’s Pip-Boy to get into Vault 32 and that all records of Vault 32 were blocked. While this evidenceestablishes a connection between Lee and his mom, only his sister would get the full truth.

When Norm suspects that 33’s newly elected Overseer Betty Pearson (also a former Vault-Tec employee from 31) is onto him, he uses the terminal to communicate with the Overseer from 31posing as Betty.

This gets Norm into Vault 31, where he discovers it’s being run by Vault-Tec’s Bud Askins, who’s now just a ‘Brain-on-a-Roomba.’ Bud explains to Norm everything about the experiment with Vaults 31, 32, and 33, and Norm is witness to all the cryogenic pods of bodies still stored and waiting to be woken up.

As of the finale,Norm is unable to leave Vault 31due to him knowing about the secret that no dweller was supposed to find out about (and it’s also implied that Vault 32 found out). He’s given no choice but to either enter Hank’s pod or wither away stuck in Vault 31.

What Is Chet’s Relation To The MacLeans?

Chetis the Gate-Keeper of Vault 33. His job was opening access to various areas around the Vault, like the doors between Vault 32 and 33.He later loses that privilege after he lets Lucy out into the wasteland, albeit unwillingly.

Even though they’re cousins,Chet exhibits a very strange attraction to Lucyand wants to seek a relationship, even going so far as to try to prevent her wedding. But, incest is obviously not in the Vault’s best interest for creating healthy and superior specimens of humanity and is plain wrong, a point Lucy tries to hammer through to him.

Chet is also best friends with his cousin Norm and theyform a dynamic duo togetherin the early stages of the Vault 32 investigation, until Chet finds that he wants to be a partner to Stephanie andhelp raise her childin the wake of her husband Bert’s murder in the raid.

Together,Chet and Stephanie, along with their newborn, are transferred as a family unit to Vault 32where they will start a new life in an effort to reset the devastation that was done to it, though Chet is secretly also aware of what really happened.

What Happened To Rose MacLean?

Rose MacLean is the wife of Hank MacLean andmother to their children Lucy and Norman. She married Hank MacLean and had a wonderful life together with him in Vault 33, until one day she discovered something she wasn’t supposed to.

Rose learned that someone from the surface world was siphoning water from their Vault, meaning there was evidence that civilization had already returned and everything that the Vaults were building towards Reclamation Day was a sham.

Rose felt she was being lied to andforcibly left the Vault in search of the community, taking her kids Lucy and Norm with herand removing them from the Vault. She discovered Shady Sands, a place that offered hope and seemed to restore a little of what was before the bombs were dropped.

Rose grew close to Lee Moldaverand she and Lucy seemed very happy living in Shady Sands. When Hank found out and discovered Rose there with his children,he took them back with him to Vault 33 and blew up Shady Sands as a result of his wife’s actions, as well as to hide any evidence of its existence.

As a result of the blast, Rose lost her arm andturned into a feral Ghoul from the radiation, kept alive in that state by Lee Moldaver at the NCR’s base at the Griffith Observatory, until her death from the mercy killing of her daughter in 2296.
