XboxEra co-host and leaker Nick Baker recently claimed he received “evidence” of anUnchartedremake. While details are scarce, YouTuber Speclizer_ claims they found proof of its existence inThe Last of Us Part 2’sfiles.
“In the years I’ve been reversing, datamining, and modding TLOU2, I’ve noticedhundredsof references to The Last of Us remake (internally called ‘t1x’) in TLOU2’s files but thought nothing of it. Two years later,TLOU remake was announced and released,” Speclizer_ tweeted. “But this isn’t all that was left over. There are also hundreds of references to Uncharted 1.”
What we saw, it doesn’t necessarily mean this is 100 percent happening. But it does seem indicate that, at the very least, it was being strongly considered.
There are characters such as “elena” and “u1-drake” listed in the files, and a level referencing the plane crash scene. Speclizer_ also found a dev task file referencing “vasg-ucpt”, AKA Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group. “uc” likely means Uncharted, but it’s unclear what “pt” stands for.
Baker wasn’t the only one onthe XboxEra podcastto receive evidence of such a remake. Fellow co-host Jon Clarke was also sent alleged proof independent of Baker. It’s possible that this information was dug out ofthe enormous Insomniac hack, so more details may come to light, but for the time being, we don’t know much about this remake other than its possible developer and that Sony at least considered it at one point.
Whatever the case, it fits with Sony’s strategy for current-gen so far - we’ve just had a remake of the first Last of Us,a remaster of Until Dawn is inbound, andthe PS5 launched with a remake of Demon’s Souls.
Remakes and remasters have also been used to bring PlayStation exclusives to PC. Interestingly, Sony said two years ago that the reason the Uncharted trilogy hasn’t been ported to PC yet is becauseit would need a “major overhaul visually”.
XboxEra speculates that a remake could be used to breathe life into the series after laying dormant for seven years, paving the way for a new entry. However, Naughty Dog is rumoured to be working on a new IP and justconfirmed plans for The Last of Us Part 3. It also recentlycancelled a standalone Factions game, so it’ll be a while yet before a new Uncharted game gets released if one does.
