Cat Quest puts two of the best things together: cats and RPGs, and it does it well. You play as Hero, a cat who’s on a mission to rescue his catnapped sister, the events of which have unlocked a special power within him.
The game’s got everything you love in RPGs: charming NPCs and side quests, exciting exploration, and equipment that enhances your preferred playstyle. Add in some (or many) cat puns, and you’ve got a purrfect RPG to enjoy when you want something a little less heavy.

For something more in-tune with darker fantasy, there’sNeverwinter Nights. The game’s plot has you deal with a lot — your city being invaded, as well as a plague, monsters, and, eventually, a cult. And that’s not even counting the side stories and quests you may follow and complete. You certainly earn the title of “hero” in this game.
The actual gameplay is reminiscent ofDungeons & Dragons, since you’ll be rolling dice for actions both inside and outside of battle. But the coolest aspect of Neverwinter Nights is probably the variety of weapons, magic, and armor you get access to for your character. The way you mix and match your clothes, accessories, and weapons determines your stats, making or breaking every dice roll.

There are many Zelda-likes out there, but how many of them are actually good? Oceanhorn is pretty reminiscent of a fewLegend of Zeldagames; heck, even the character bears an undeniable resemblance to Link. However, this game isn’t a lazy attempt at a cash grab, especially considering it’s free on Android.
Oceanhorn has you traveling through different islands as you search for your missing father, but you end up finding a lot more than him. You’ll encounter puzzles and creatures, and uncover mysteries along the way. Sail the seas, fight monsters, and most importantly, go fishing as you discover the clues to your father’s disappearance.
Sky: Children of the Lightis a charming game with an art style you don’t really see in other MMORPGs. You don’t usually expect MMORPGs to be relaxing, but it’s one of Sky’s main draws. There are eight realms for you to explore andmeet characters and other players in, all with different settings.
There are also a bunch of customization items to give your character and make them stand out from the rest. If you’re the type to enjoy taking in the scenery in games likeBreath of the WildandGenshin Impactas you glide in the sky, this title will give you that same satisfaction.
Genshin Impact exploded in popularity when it first came out in 2020, and it’s still going strong today. You play as the Traveler, who’s looking for their missing twin after waking up in the unfamiliar land of Teyvat. Along the way, you meet a variety of different characters, many of whom you’re able to add to your party if you get them during their banners.
Teyvat is made up of seven main regions, each one drastically different in aesthetics and culture. The gameis open-world, so you get to run around as you please, solving hidden puzzles and finding bits of lore that contribute to the game’s intricately unfolding story. There are also events always running to give you more rewards and story arcs.
Known as the little sibling to Genshin Impact,Honkai: Star Railis a more recent game with a sci-fi setting, as opposed to Genshin’s fantasy one. It’s more linear and uses turn-based gameplay, so you won’t face the same problems if you get overwhelmed by Genshin’s open world and fast-paced combat.
Your character is known as the Trailblazer, and they wake up with amnesia on the Astral Express, a space train that runs through the cosmos. Things take a turn from there, and you quickly befriend a few ofthe game’s characters. Though it’s a gacha game, Star Rail is generally more forgiving and generous, so you won’t really be struggling for characters if you’re a more casual player. But their stories and designs are often so cool that it can be hard to resist.
Chrono Triggeris consideredone of the best RPGs of the SNES and PS1 era. If you didn’t get to experience it back then, good news: it’s on mobile now! The port isn’t perfect, as it can get a bit buggy, but it’s worth pushing through to get to play one of the RPGs that defined a generation.
The game’s story deals with time, so its settings range from the distant past to the far-off future, and the characters and enemies you encounter follow suit. The combat system being Active Time Battle gives a little spice to the typical turn-based combat you come to expect from RPGs. There’s also a mechanic that lets you combine different characters' abilities to unleash entirely new ones, and it’s quite fun to experiment with. Even with how old it is, Chrono Trigger stands out in the RPG genre.
If you’re a fan ofPokemonor have been wanting to try it without spending too much money,Coromonis definitely worth playing. Its Pokemon inspirations are blatantly obvious, but it’s not a cheap clone of the franchise. Coromon has the heart (and graphics) of early Pokemon games while retaining its own personality.
There areover 100 Coromonto discover and catch, and you can even customize the colors of the ones you have, along with your own outfit. The turn-based battle system also has an added stamina mechanic that forces you to think tactically in every fight, since every action your Coromon takes will deplete some stamina. Not to worry, though; if you prefer something more chill, you can adjust the difficulty settings to your liking.
