Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s creative director, Tetsuya Nomura, has revealed that he’s “even more nervous” about fan reactions to this game’s ending than he was forRemake.
As exciting as it is that we’re just a few weeks away from being reunited with Cloud and the rest of the party, that’s not the only emotion that most fans are feeling. We all know that something big and very likely bad is going to happen at the Forgotten Capitaljust like it did in the original game, but we have no idea who out of the beloved cast of characters is going to meet a grisly fate.

It’s enough to make anyone nervous, a feeling that I’m sure a lot of Final Fantasy fans have leading up to launch, but it seems like no one is feeling that more than the game’s creative director, Tetsuya Nomura.During a recent interview with Automaton Media, Nomura was asked whether the ending for Rebirth will have as many twists as Remake’s did, which is a fair ask considering how that finale set the stage for what Rebirth is doing.
In response, Nomura noted that the idea behind Remake’s twist was to essentially lull players into a false sense of security and then surprise them with an ending that changed everything. While Nomura seems confident in Remake’s ending, he admits to being “even more nervous” about how players are going to react to Rebirth, as he “honestly cannot imagine what players will be thinking.
“But with Rebirth, I honestly cannot imagine what players will be thinking. For example, I set up the direction of the final scene in FFVII Remake that you asked about. I can’t really talk about it now, so I’ll just say that the final scene of the next game will have a very… different impact to the previous one. I’m even more nervous about how people are going to react to some of the things in Rebirth than I was for Remake.”
Well, if you weren’t already nervous about how Rebirth is going to end, then Nomura’s comments are sure to make you start fearing for Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, and the rest of the party’s lives. Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s ending was a huge departure from the original game and something that caused some controversy with fans at the time, so if Nomura is even more worried about how everyone’s going to react this time, you know it’s going to be big.
