Medici

First up is the easiest of the three, Medici. In this new edition of a classic Italy-based tabletop game, 2-6 players will take the role of merchants taking part in daily auctions, with the intent of loading up their ship with the most valuable wares. Over the course of three in-game days, you will continue to do so, tallying up your earnings at the end of each day. By the end of the game, the winner is the merchant who has the most Florens, but with bonuses and additional values to certain types of goods, you will need to play well and outbid where you can, while not going so far as to lose profit.

It’s a fantastic and quick experience, and is super easy to learn. With a time estimation of 60 minutes, you may easily meet this on even your first time playing the game. It has additional board space if there are only two players to compensate, but a larger group certainly brings out the requirement for tactical thinking a little more.

Sea Of Thieves: Voyage Of Legends

The second game here is an adaptation of the Sea of Thieves video game, and it honestly does a fantastic job at replicating the feeling of voyaging across the seas, island to island, and facing down the threats of the ocean. In this tile-based game, you will be using a whole bunch of tokens as you attempt to become the most renowned pirate, plundering, looting, and fighting skeletons included.

2-4 players will battle competitively, with enemies or even each other, as you manage your fleet, find more loot, upgrade your vessels, and try not to succumb to the depths. Players will take turns, very similar to that of traditional TTRPGs, as phases of the seas will also progress with each round, bringing more threats and more opportunities. Get the most loot, sell it at the outpost, create the most powerful fleet, and aim to be crowned Pirate Legend - only one can come out on top.

Dark Souls: The Sunless City - Core Set

And last but not least, an even bigger name for the tabletop scene and a returning one at that, is Dark Souls: The Sunless City Core Set. While Dark Souls: The Board Game already exists, including a vast number of expansion sets, The Sunless City Core Set is a standalone experience that requires no previous sets or knowledge.

With refreshed rules and a new campaign and encounter system, Dark Souls: The Sunless City will see 1-3 players co-operatively fight through increasingly tough battles, including boss fights with some familiar foes. you may take this on alone, with all of the difficulty it will entail, or bring friends to tackle the dangers with you. Choose from the Pyromancer, the Herald, and the Warrior as you prepare to die, die, and try again.

This one is the most complex of these three games, and while it does offer refreshed rules, it will still take quite some time to learn, and even more time to get to grips with playing it. It’s absolutely worth it for fans of Dark Souls and TTRPGs, but be prepared for quite the challenge.
