What ifStar Warswent the way ofDead Space? There’s plenty of material in Legends and Canon to make that a reality, but we’ve yet to see an official horror game from Disney. So, one fan decided to do it themselves. Cue Deathtroopers.
As reported byIGN, the game is based on the novel of the same name which tells the story of zombie Stormtroopers plaguing a lone Star Destroyer stranded in the empty cavern of space. The book is no longer canon, butthe Ahsoka Disney Plus seriesresurrectedthe concept with its own Night Troopers, soldiers who can rise from the dead and continue fighting despite suffering mortal wounds.

The game opens with a lone Stormtrooper investigating an abandoned Star Destroyer covered in the wreckage of a Tie Fighter fleet. Once they dock, they find corpses strewn about the corridors, the alarm blaring. One of the troopers is still standing, bobbing back and forward, but flashing lights reveal huge gashes in their armour with fresh blood still pouring out.
The cutscene ends and we’re left to explore the spaceship, carefully manoeuvring past our dead comrades, hoping they don’t wake up.
How Does Star Was Deathtroopers Play?
You’re put into the third-person perspective of a Stormtrooper, with a blaster handy to fend off any stragglers. The problem is that this isn’t just any Star Destroyer. As seen in the trailer, you eventually run into a zombified Darth Vader.
Since we’re hardly as powerful as Luke Skywalker or as nimble as Obi-Wan Kenobi, we quickly end up just another part of the corpse pile. It doesn’t look like you can avoid this since it’s not a fight, but a pre-rendered cutscene.
However, the objective up until that fatal moment is pretty simple - survive for five minutes. It’s ahorde shooterwhere the waves of zombies are wearing Stormtrooper armour. And once you’ve survived that initial run, you unlock a new Nightmare Mode.
If you enjoy the game, developer Stefano Cagnani has another Deathtrooper project that’s available right now called thesecond chapter.
It takes place on Return of the Jedi’s iconic Endor at an old resistance outpost, full of zombified scout troopers, and the story is that you are a fleeing Stormtrooper who has crashed onto the moon. I just hope the poor little Ewoks got away unharmed.
