It’s the Year of Shadow, everybody. WeSonicfans have deemed it so, and for good reason. The black and red hedgehog rarely gets a look in despite being a core character in the Sonic series for more than 20 years. That has all changed asShadow now has two Lego sets,a Generations expansioncoming with the popular game’s remaster, and best of all, an introduction to the live-action movies inSonic the Hedgehog 3before the end of 2024, provided the movie’s release isn’t delayed.

There will likely be lesser celebrations of Shadow sprinkled in throughout the year too, starting now via his introduction toSonic Superstars. Well, technically, Shadow hasn’t been added to Sonic Superstars. A Shadow costume that Sonic can now wear in Superstars has been added.Segapresumably went with a costume rather than Shadow being an entirely new character as the latter would have involved giving him his own unique abilities like the other playable characters in the game.

By simply adding Shadow via a costume for Sonic, Sega has bypassed a tonne of additional work. Yes, it would have been nice for Shadow to have been fully playable in Superstars, but having a Shadow costume is better than nothing. Best of all, the Shadow costume is free, and it’s relatively easy to claim. All you need to do is click on the link for the platform you play Superstars on in the box below and claim your free costume.

WHERE TO PLAY

A Shadow costume has been added to Sonic Superstars as free DLC, and you can claim it for your platform of choice through the links below.

Reminder that you need to own a copy of Sonic Superstars to make use of your new Shadow costume. I’m sure you realized that already, but just in case there’s any confusion.

Sega has made no mention of future plans for Sonic Superstars, meaning the Shadow costume now available might be the last DLC the 2.5D sidescroller ever gets. Releasing the same week asSuper Mario Bros. WonderandMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, and not celebrated nearly as much as either of those hit games, it seems likely Superstars didn’t sell as well as Sega might have hoped having faced such stiff competition.

The studio’s attention has clearly already shifted to Sonic x Shadow Generations which will be released this fall, just in time for Sonic 3 hitting cinemas. There’s also the Knuckles TV show coming to Paramount Plus on July 04, 2025.
