PlayStation’srecent State of Play showcase was pretty good if you’re a Sonic, mostlythanks to Sega revealing Sonic x Shadow Generations, a game with a title that will traumatize curious parents and children for years to come. It delighted fans of the series by giving Shadow the Hedgehog the spotlight he deserves after being ignored for a while, and Sega is going the extra mile by even retroactively adding him to Sonic Superstars… as a costume.
First reported byGame Informer, Sega has announced that to celebrate the announcement of Sonic x Shadow Generations, a costume of Shadow the Hedgehog will be added to Sonic Superstars on February 15 across every platform. Not only that, but it will also be a free addition to the game, and you’ll be able to play through the game’s Story Mode with this Shadow costume equipped. Unfortunately, Sega hasn’t released any images of the costume just yet, but at least we don’t have to wait long to see it in game.
If you’re a fan of the Sonic series, you’ll probably be aware that Shadow was a big request from fans to be included in Sonic Superstars, as he is in every game that features Sonic’s colorful cast of friends. At the time, Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka said thatShadow’s inclusion wouldn’t make sensebecause he “was in a capsule at that time”, explaining that the Classic series which Superstars is based on existed long before the Modern series did, which saw Shadow’s introduction in Sonic Adventure 2.

Obviously, having Shadow appear in costume form gets around the whole timeline issue, and it’s nice for Sega and Sonic Team to have actually found a way to sort out such a big fan request. We’ll have to see whether this costume is of any substance or if it’s just a color swap, though there are some neat costumes in Superstars, such as the Lego costumes and the costume that lets you run around as Sonic’s original bunny design.
With this news, it does seem like Sega and Sonic Team are trying to make 2024 Shadow’s year. Not only do we have Sonic Superstars getting a Shadow costume and a Sonic Generations remaster getting Shadow DLC, but we also have the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to look forward to, whichhas set up Shadow the Hedgehog as the movie’s primary antagonist. It’s a big year for Shadow, and it’s about time too.
