Nintendoand Illumination have kicked off Mario Day by revealing that they’re working together on another animatedSuper Mario Bros. movie, which will release in theatres on June 08, 2025.
Today is Mario Day (Mar10, get it?) and, although most of us weren’t expecting much to come from it beyond announcing the release date for thePaper Mario The Thousand-Year Door remake, Nintendo has surprised us all with an even bigger announcement that I can’t believe we didn’t already have - we’re getting another animated Super Mario Bros. movie.
Over on the official Nintendo Twitter account, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced that Nintendo and Illumination are working together once more to create a “new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros”. Miyamoto and Illumination’s CEO, Chris Meledandri, are both careful not to call it a sequel to the first film or “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2”, so it’s possible that it’s something else entirely.
After Miyamoto announces the new Mario Bros, movie, he reveals that Nintendo and Illumination are both producing it, before passing the virtual mic over to Illumination’s CEO, Chris Meledandri. Meledandri confirms that work on the new film is already underway with the same directors and animation studio that made the first movie.
“We are now working with the folks over at Illumination on a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.”
Although it seems that the new Super Mario Bros. movie (god I wish they’d just confirmed it was a sequel) is still early in development, that didn’t stop Meledandri from revealing that it’s going to be released on August 03, 2025, provided it doesn’t end up getting any delays like the first movie did.
So far, we don’t know anything about the upcoming Mario movie beyond Meledandri saying that the team is storyboarding “new locations”. If it does end up being a sequel, which is almost definitely is, it’s likely that it’ll focus on Yoshi in some regard, as he was teased in the credits for the first movie.
Although it’s a nice surprise to have a new movie from Illumination and Nintendo confirmed, it doesn’t come as a surprise that a sequel is being worked on.The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of the best-performing animated movies of all time, sitting just below Frozen 2 and The Lion King live-action remake at $1.36 billion.
