How Many Games Did Naughty Dog Develop?

Naughty Dog has been in the games-making industry probably a lot longer than you thought, a career spanning decades back to evenbefore the name changeyou now know them by.

Didyouknow thatNaughty Dog used to be a company called JAM Software, which developed its first game in 1985? That game was known as Math Jam and there were subsequent releases of obscure titles such as Ski Crazed, Dream Zone, and Keef the Thief throughout the 1980s for systems like Amiga and the Apple II.

Naughty Dog solidified its name in the world of gaming withthe 1996 release of Crash Bandicoot, nowone of the most iconic platformer mascots of all time, and that was followed up by the Jak and Daxter series, similar in its themes to Ratchet & Clank.

After Jak and Daxter, Naughty Dog switched gears into character-driven cinematic adventures withthe start of the Uncharted series in 2007, introducing gamers to the carefree Indiana Jones-inspired explorer Nathan Drake and his partner Victor Sullivan.

And in 2013, Naughty Dog once again took things in a new emotional survival-horror direction and made what’s still considered its best game and a masterpiece in storytelling and game design -The Last of Us.

From a technical achievement and gameplay standpoint, however, The Last of Us Part 2 still reigns supreme.

Since the studio’s founding in 1984, Naughty Dog (previously JAM Software) went on to createa total of 26 video games(including remasters and collections). That’s a lot of characters to conceive and handle gracefully!

Which Game Has The Most Characters?

With so many iconic franchises all made by one studio, likeCrash Bandicoot,Jak and Daxter,Uncharted, andThe Last of Us, it might be of interest to see which isolated game from all these series went above and beyond to deliverthe greatest number of characters.

Much to no surprise, that game is The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog’s longest, most ambitious, and most technically and graphically impressive sequel yet. The main characters from the first game are now also joined by a whole new expanded set of characters in Jackson and Abby Anderson’s camp.

The Last of Us Part 2’s main story takes an average of 24 hours to complete, making it seven hours longer than Jak 2 and 10 hours longer than The Last of Us Part 1 and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

The Last of Us Part 2 had a budget of $220 million.

Ellie, Abby, and Joel, along with the rest of the main characters already make up north of 20. When you factor inall the enemy NPCs like Seraphites, WLF militia, and the various infectedlike Clickers, Bloaters, Stalkers, Runners, Shamblers, and the Rat King, you’re looking at a voice ensemble contributing toapproximately 153 characters.

The game with the second highest number of characters is the equally ambitious finale to the Nathan Drake saga, A Thief’s End, whichstill has precisely 123 characterscredited in the voice acting department (given there’s multiplayer and that the story also introduced Nate’s brother, Nate’s daughter, Rafe Adler, and Nadine Ross).

And in third place is 2013’s The Last of Uswith a cast of 67 charactersthat includes main, supporting characters, and enemy NPCs.

By comparison,Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has 23 actorscredited for only nine different types of characters,Jak 2 features around 21 characterswith 16 actors, andCrash Bandicoot: Warped has a mere 11characters.

With such a large amount of characters seen in The Last of Us Part 2,every performance, no matter how small, transcendsand is absolutely Oscar-worthy, and that’s quite a difficult feat Naughty Dog has mastered.
