Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa had to tango with Rude and Elena of the Turks in Chapter 3 ofFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but Barret and Red XIII aren’t left out in the cold. Their opponent is the mighty Mythril Golem, a crystalline creature that doesn’t appear particularly happy to see our heroes.

With two phases, high damage output, and multiple targetable body parts, the Mythril Golem’s got it going on. But with the right setup, and some foreknowledge on what makes the Mythril Golem wilt like a flower, you’ll be ready to blast it to smithereens and get out of this place for good.

Mythril Golem Boss Fight Overview

We begin our guide on battling Rude and Elena in Chapter 3 by pointing out that their speed is your greatest enemy. Mythril Golem, Chapter 3’s other boss,is quite slow; its raw strength and high defense are your main concerns.

Many - though crucially, notall- ofthe Mythril Golem’s attacks are physical. Which is to say,for most attacks, your goal is to remain out of rangeof the boss itself. This is fairly easy to get the hang of, except arguably in the case ofLeaping Strike.

Regardless, especially forthe first half of the battle, it’s probably best that youmaintain control of Barret and keep a wide berthat all times.

In the second half, the Mythril Golem will grow in size. Its suite of attacks will includeprojectile-based strikes, so you’ll need to be more nimble. One of its new attacksshoots straight ahead for large damage, while the other fires off a comparblyweakbarrage with a wide area-of-effect.

Mythril Golem Battle Strategy

As we’ve mentioned, prioritize Barret as your controlled character. Head into the battle withRed XIII equipped with the Lightning Materiaso that he doesn’t need to get in too close to this bulwark of a baddie (and when his ATB charge is up, make sure he casts it).

In the first phase, take the time to target and destroy the Mythril Golem’s head. This willpressure the Mythril Golem, so pepper it withFocused Shot and Thunderthereafter.

Once the Mythril Golem is at its midway point, when itgrows considerably in size, it’s a little safer to get up closer todefend as Red XIII until Vengeance Mode is charged.

Vengeance Mode increases Red’s attack power and speed, butthe best thing about it in this case is that Siphon Fang will let Red gain some HP back. This isn’t a fight that we can have a dedicated healer for, per se, so the self-sufficiency of Siphon Fang is invaluable.

If Barret and Red’s Synergy Strike pops (and it likely will),save it until the Mythril Golem is staggeredand watch as its HP bar is cleaved through like butter.
