Summary
There are all kinds of things that can explode and destroy blocks inMinecraft, from weaker sources like Ghast fireballs and Creeper explosions, all the way to more serious firepower, like TNT blocks, End Crystals, and the Wither’s deadly ranged attacks.
Although this is a simplification of the complex calculations being run behind the scenes, whether a block gets destroyed depends on two main things: how much damage the explosion is causing, and how resistant the blocks being affected are to explosions. After reading, you’ll get a better idea about just how safe your base really is from explosive damage.

Block resistance values weresourced from the official Minecraft wiki. Some blocks mentioned, like trapdoors or Dragon Eggs might not seem like blocks, but are nonetheless classified as such in the game’s code.
8Block Resistance Category: Five
Can Withstand Ghast Projectiles
Blocks likeMob Spawners, Iron Trapdoors, and Iron Doorshave a blast resistance value of five. While an Iron Door might save you from a Zombie trying to break into your house or base,a Creeper or bundle of TNT can easily blow down these defences.
These blockscan withstand, however, explosive projectiles, like theFireballs of Ghastswhich will shoot at you inthe Nether, since they have a blast power of one, and thus are unable to break blocks with blast resistance values greater than three.
7Block Resistance Category: Six
Can’t Resist A Creeper Explosion
There are plenty of blocks that have a blast resistance value of six, includingRaw Copper, Andesite, Blocks of Diamond, Cobblestone, Deepslate, and more. If you’ve built structures out of Cobblestone, you probably learned the hard way that these blocks aren’t very explosion-proof.
You’d think some of the blocks in this category would be given higher values, likeNether Brick or Purpur Blocks, given the harsh environments they’re found in. Regardless, make sure to plop down plenty of torches and keep your eye out for mischievous Creepers.
6Block Resistance Category: Nine
Can Almost Resist A Creeper Explosion
There are only four blocks with a blast resistance value of nine:End Stone, plus the two blocks that can be crafted from this material, namely bricks and walls, and a Dragon Egg, which is surprising since it’s black and purple appearance would suggest it’s as strong as Obsidian.
Sadly, these blocks are justbarely unable to resist the variety of explosions you might encounterthat have a blast power between three and six, including Creeper explosions, TNT blasts, Charged Creeper explosions, and the colorful explosion that results from destroying an End Crystal.
5Block Resistance Category: 100
Fight Explosive Enemies In Water, Not Lava
If you’ve been playing Minecraft for a decent amount of time, most if not all of you have figured out thatwater is your best friend when it comes to explosions, especially those caused by Creepers or TNT, since it absorbs the damage of these blasts.
Lava functions similarly, although before Java version 1.7.2, the flowing bits of lava were destructible. Since it only takes about two and a half seconds to die in a pool of lavaif you have no armor on, it’s best tostick with water source blocks if you want explosion protectionin a pinch.
4Block Resistance Category: 600
Thank Goodness Nothing Can Blow Up Your Ender Chest
Whilethe Ender Chestis the only block in this blast resistance category, it’s a welcome sight, since it’d be a shame to have such a useful and versatile form of storage be susceptible to common sources of explosive damage.
The only thing you need to worry about is the Wither, since the blue skull projectiles that it fires will blow up any breakable block you’d encounter in Survival mode; just make sure you summon and fight this boss far away from anything and everything you care about.
3Block Resistance Category: 1,200
Not Even TNT Could Break These Blocks
There are only eight blocks with a blast resistance value of 1,200, such asAnvils, Enchantment Tables, Obsidian, Blocks of Netherite, or Reinforced Deepslate, which is the only naturally occurring block, found in Ancient Cities, thatcan’t be destroyed by the Wither’s attacks.
Don’t get too excited though;if you’re in Survival mode, there’s no way to get your hands on Reinforced Deepslate, even if you have Silk Touch on a pickaxe or try to be clever with pistons. Otherwise, you really don’t have anything to worry about when it comes to explosions happening near these blocks.
2Block Resistance Category: 3,600,000
There’s No Possible Way To Blow Up These Blocks
With such an overwhelmingly high blast resistance value, it seems blocks within this category, likeBedrock, End Portal Frames, or Command Blocks, wasMojang’s solution to preventing any possible glitch or exploit from destroying these vital instruments of the core gameplay loop.
It’d be a massive problem, after all, if you somehow destroyed an End Portal Frame and weren’t able to progress to the End, or found a way to get through a layer of Bedrock, and either fell through the world, or found yourself on top of an infinite plane made from this block.
1Block Resistance Category: 3,600,000.8
Overkill And Only Obtainable Through Commands
It’s a bit comical that these two blocks,Light Blocks and Barrier blocks, got a blast resistance category of their own, despite only being 0.8 more resistant than the category just below them. However, this category is distinct in the sense that they areonly obtainable through the use of console commands.
Most commonly, these blocks are used by custom map creators, and are a means to not only add nice aesthetics through lighting, but also to ensure that players aren’t accessing areas that they shouldn’t be in, or finding map exploits.
