NetEase has just announced a free-to-playOverwatch-like hero shooter calledMarvel Rivals, featuring 6v6 matches, destructible environments, and a roster comprised of Guardians, Avengers, and X-Men.

The story behind the game is thatDoctor Doomand his 2099 counterpart are forcingthe multiverseto collide in what is known as the Timestream Entanglement, akin to the comics' Battleworld. Across each battle, heroes and villains from different universes band together to take down both Dooms before they can achieve multiversal domination. That’s why you see Magneto and Loki fighting on the same side as Spider-Man and Black Panther.

In the trailer, we see Doctor Strange opening a portal that other players can leap through to skip ahead across the map (a very Symmetra-like ability), Spider-Man webbing up enemies to stun them, Loki summoning duplicates and even becoming other characters (akin to Spy inTeam Fortress 2), Rocket and Groot teaming up in one of the many synergy abilities, and more.

We see a whole host of different playable characters on display, but NetEase promises new characters to arrive with each seasonal update. We see all of the following in the reveal:

Marvel Rivals was leaked earlier this week via a Twitter user called Kurakasis. It was then corroborated byTheStreamrwho claimed that it’s a new third-person shooter from NetEase with a “polygonal approach to the art style […] similar toValorant”.

They were on the money, butSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueandMarvel’s AvengersleakerMiller Rossclaims that the reveal was not made in “response to the leaks”.
