At the start ofSons of the Forest, you are lost on an island with only a small GPS device to guide you. On this device, you will see different icons denoting the important parts of the map you should visit to be better prepared for the ever-increasing challenges.
Understanding the icons on your GPS is the first step to getting your bearings before you further explore the mysterious new island. Furthermore, tracking down some of these locations can give you your own map markers that you can use to find your way back to important places across the map.

How To Place Map Markers
Whether it be on construction workers or lost members of your team,you will find GPS locatorsacross the map. Once youpick them up off the bodies, you can thenplace them on sticksto mark somewhere, so you always knowhow to get backto that location.
GPS Locatorsthat aren’t in useappear as blue question markson the map. You can also craft a GPS Locator after printing a case at a 3D printer.

Kelvinhas a GPS locator, so you know where he is. You cangive one to Virginiaas well once she becomes friendly.
There are several GPS locators, withsome being ever-present markerson the map showing important objectives andothers only showing once you get closeto them. Once you change the symbol and place it in the world,it will always showyou where you left it.

Caves
Thewhite markers with a line betweenthem on your map areimportant cavesthatlead to a separate underground areathat can be as expansive as it is dangerous. There arealso unmarked caveson the island, but these usuallydon’t require a loading animationor have any enemies that are too strong.
You can alsofind bunkers and other important facilities underground, but these may require a keycard to activate. There are alsofour 3D printersacross the island, with some being located inside the caves. These aren’t marked, soit’s smart to place a GPS Locator near oneor multiple that are close to your base.

Golf Carts
Golf Carts are the blue pulsing steering wheel iconsthat you’ll see on the map as you start to move around more on the paths. Theicons don’t appear unless you’re within a short distanceaway, but there are enough on the island that you usually won’t have to try too hard toget a Golf Cart.
You cantake them back to your base, where you’ll always have one nearby. If you do this, it’s better to choose one close sincethey have a battery chargethat can be used up. It willrecharge using the solar panel on the roofafter a short time.

Hang Gliders
Sometimes you’ll seepulsing grey markers on the mapwhen you’re near cliffs,representing Hang Gliders. These allow you tosoar off the edge of cliffsand anywhere else that’s from a height.
As long as you arecareful about how you steer, it’s fairlyeasy to stay in the airwhile using the Hang Glider. When approaching the ground for a landing, balance so that you’retouching down softly.
Helicopter Crash Site
Similarly to caves,you will always be able to see where your helicopter crashedwhen you start the game. A cave may overlap it, but you should always be able to find your way back to the crash andall the surrounding supplies.
It can be agreat way to orient yourselfwhen you have no other waypoints on the map.
