A few of the creatures inArk: Survival Ascendedaren’t too far removed from their modern-day counterparts. The Achatina is pretty much the same as certain snails today, and enjoys inching around in the watery swamp regions on The Island. This shelled, slow-moving gastropod isn’t just a good source of Chitin, though.

Tamed Achatina make adorable pets, and naturally produce some pretty important materials for free, which can help you progress in the early stages of the game or come in handy in the end game. Knocking them out may be easy, but these not-so-little snails are particular about their food.

Where To Find Achatina

Achatina are mostly found in thecenter areas of The Island, especially in theswamps surrounding the Redwood Forest, in theRedwood Forestitself, and thesmaller swamp in the center rightportion of the map.

They’re anuncommon spawnin these areas, but they’re aslightly more common find in two cavesalso located in the center of The Island:

How To Tame Achatina

Taming an Achatina issimilar to most other knock-out tames. Still, it shares somefairly unique defensive mechanicswithanother creature, the Doedicurus, and Achatinaonly eat a specific foodfor taming and, in general, theSweet Vegetable Cake.

Uponlosing two-thirds of its HP, an Achatina willretreat into its shell, and not only will it take90 percent reduced damage from wildandtamed creatures, but it also becomesimmune to damage from humans.

Achatina alsotakes reduced damagewhen they’restruck on their backside or shellnormally.

Between thisdefensive abilityand theAchatina’s low HP, it’seasy to kill them by mistake or trigger the abilitybefore you can knock them unconscious, especially if you’reusing a Bow or Crossbow.

If you’retaming them with a Bow or Crossbow, go for mid-levelAchatina between levels 50 and 100. You have agood chance of knocking them unconsciousin one or two shotswithout them dying or retreatinginto their shell.

Yourbest chanceof getting an Achatina unconscious is to use aLongneck Rifle and Tranquilizer ammoon them formaximum torpor infliction for the least amount of damage.

Aim for their heads, andpause in between shotsto let the torpor build up, and you’llknock the Achatina unconscious fairly easilysince they don’t have a high torpor stat.

Ittakes some for their tamingthough, thanks toSweet Vegetable Cakes restoring 500 Food, and theywon’t eat ituntil they’remissing at least 500 Food.

Achatinaget preyed onby a lot of wild creatures, so make sureyou enclose them in Wooden Spikesor a taming pen once they’re unconscious tokeep them safe.

Achatina Uses

Achatina arereally useful creaturesto have tamed, especially in the early gamewhen resources likeCementing PasteandOrganic Polymeraremore scarce, and you may not have access to the creatures that harvest them more effectively.

If youset tamed Achatina to Wandering, they willpassively produce Achatina Pasteand Organic Polymer in their inventories, up to a maximum of 100 each.

Achatina Pasteis a resource thatacts as a Cementing Paste substitutein any recipe that uses it, such as Water Jars and Polymer.

BothTamed and Wild Achatinaalsoproduce Achatina Paste instead of Feces, and willleave it behindon the ground as they rest or move.

Achatina carrying Organic Polymeralso increases itsspoil time by three times, so they make forexcellent organic polymer-specific preserversif you invest in theirWeight stat.
