The Coral Snakes have been a thorn in Battahl’s side for some time inDragon’s Dogma 2, and even with some of them jailed, the authorities aren’t any closer to bringing them down. One of those recently jailed is Hugo, a young man with a good heart despite his banditry.

You could just leave him to rot in prison, but it would be a terrible sentence for someone whose crimes are relatively minor. Hope isn’t lost for Hugo though. You might just be able to help the young man find a better way of life if you’ve got the connections to do so.

How To The Start Off The Pilfered Path Quest

Off The Pilfered Path is thenext quest after Mercy Of Thieves, and you may get a hint that it’s available byspeaking to Benjaminnear theOxcart Stop in Bakbattahlafter aroundone in-game day has passed.

You’ll also need to havecompleted the side questsTolled To RestandShadowed Prayersfor this quest to trigger.

He’ll mentionHugo being in the Battahli gaols, but that he isn’t talking yet. Letone in-game day pass, thenspeak to Benjaminagain, and he’ll give you some new info.

Head to theResidential Ward and follow the path eastuntil you reach the gaol andspeak to the guard standing outsidethe entrance, then go down inside.

The Battahli Gaolisn’t marked on the map, but there is aRiftstoneyou canuse as a location reminder nearby.

Hugo will be in thefirst cell on the north side of the roomonce you come down the stairs, but hewon’t talk until you speak to Brefft, who’s in thesecond cell on the left sideof the building.

Speak to Brefft three times in a rowto get all the necessary information from him, thengo back to Hugo.Now, you’llhave the option to speakwith him, and you’ll also gettwo options about what to tell him.

Deciding To Tell Hugo The Truth

If you decide to go ahead andtell Hugo what Brefft said, he willstop speaking to you entirely, and you’llneed to leave the gaoland let aroundone in-game day pass.

Return to the gaol andspeak to Ekratt, and he’llinform you that Hugo’s goneand that another prisoner is dead. From here, you’ll need tohead to the Ancient Battlegroundas soon as possible.

If you don’t get to the Ancient Battlegroundwithin aroundone in-game day, you will find both Hugo and Lanzo dead.

Once you’reat the Ancient Battleground, you’ll find bandit enemies within the main area that you’ll need to kill as you make your way up to thevery top of the castle areawhere aCyclops can normally be found.

You’llfind Lanzo and several bandits thereinstead of the Cyclops, and you’ll want to go ahead andattack them and kill Lanzo. Once the deed is done,Hugo will appearbehind you, and you’llneed to speak with him.

Deciding Not To Tell Hugo The Truth

If you decide tosay nothing to Hugo, you’ll insteadget a conversation about Hugo’s lifegoing forward with him, andlose the option to tell him the truth.

You canuse the Ox Cart Bell to pass a day’s timefor the quest instead of using an inn to rest and savein case you want to make a different decision.

After talking with Hugo,speak to the guard from outside the door, Eskratt, and you canpay him 1,000 Goldto speed up Hugo’s release.

Leave the gaolafter you’ve paid,let one in-game day pass, then return andspeak with Ekratt again.

You canstill go to the Ancient Battleground and kill Lanzoas long as you’ve obtained the information from Brefft.

You’ll need topay him another 2,500 Goldand letanother in-game day pass, then go back andspeak with hima third and final time.

This time,Ekratt will release Hugofrom the gaol, and you’llneed to pay him another 5,000 Goldafterward.

How To Find Honest Work For Hugo

The final quest step iswhere both decisions will intersect:regardless of which decision you made, if Hugo survives his encounterat the Ancient Battleground, you’ll need tofind himhonest work.

There aretwo options for work that you can suggestto Hugo, and both aredependent on having completed other quests: working at theRose Chateau Bordelrieorworking at Isaac’s Apothecaryin Bakbattahl.

If youhaven’t completed either quest enoughto suggest them to Hugo, he will eitherwait for your help at the Ancient Battlegroundor wait for yououtside the Battahli Gaoldepending on your earlier decisions.

How To Help Hugo Work At The Rose Chateau

If you’vecompleted Wilhelmina’s quest,Every Rose Has Its Thorns, you’ll be able tosuggestworking at the Rose Chateau, butonly if you aided Wilhelminaduring the quest andgot the good ending.

Hugo will agree to see about it, andafter a few in-game dayshave passed, you’ll be able tofind him working at the Rose Chateau, though youcan’t pay for his services.

How To Help Hugo Work At Isaac’s Apothecary

If you’vecompleted Isaac’s quest,Short-Sighted Ambition, you’re able to suggest working at the apothecary shop to Hugo, butonly if you’ve delivered a real copyofOn The Transference of Souls 2to Isaac andobtained the bad ending of the quest.
