Automatons is a much more resilient faction than Terminids inHelldivers 2. Both patrol and occupy certain zones in various maps and also drop on you spontaneously if you are spotted. Unlike Terminids that come from the ground below, automatons come from the sky through aDropship.
You can easily defeat each wave of automatons that a dropship carries and reduce their presence significantly. This can only be done if you have a heavy weapon in your hands and you hit the dropship’s weak spot timely. Failing to hit the correct spot will result in no damage, and all boarded automatons will drop from it without any damage.
How To Destroy Automaton Dropship
The automaton dropships can be destroyed in one shot by using a GR-8 Recoilless Rifleand hitting either theleft or right side of the engine. The impact or explosive damage from this weapon kills an engine quickly, making thedropship come down crashing and killing all carrying automatons.
If the fired rocket hits the center of the dropship, nothing happens. That is because thecenter of the automaton dropship is immune to any damage, andonly the engines are weak spotsof the automaton dropship.
There is a good chance that the automatons from the ship survive, and only the ship gets destroyed. This only happens if the engine is shot and blown by explosive impact after the automatons have been dropped on the ground.

How To Unlock GR-8 Recoilless Rifle
Before tryingto take down automaton dropships, you must first unlock theGR-8 Recoilless Rifle. This is a Stratagem weapon that becomes available topurchase after reaching level 5in Helldivers 2.
Once you are at that level, interact with the requisitions terminal of your ship, and you canfind the GR-8 Recoilless Rifle under the Patriotic Administration Center section.
To use a GR-8 Recoilless Rifle, you need to call in this Stratagem. Itcomes with an ammo pack and the weapon itself. You can equip both and reload the weapon alone after firing the round. However,solo reload is very slow, and it leaves your diver exposed to all the risks around you.
On the other hand, another party member can equip just the ammo pack, and you fire the main weapon on a big or stronger target. Theparty reload process becomes seamless with your teammate assisting you.
