If you’re reading this guide, congratulations! You finished your training and began your firstRise Of The Roninmission. After exploring the annals of the Black Ship and assassinating any soldiers that stand in your way, you’ve discovered Commodore Matthew Perry’s living quarters. Now, the hard work truly begins.
Matthew Perry (no, notthatMatthew Perry) is the first boss you’ll face in Rise Of The Ronin. However, he is by no means an ‘easy’ first boss. Perry’s swordsmanship carries incredible power, and his rifle aim is treacherous. You’ll need all the skills you’ve learned thus far to defeat him. A look at our boss-battle strategies wouldn’t hurt either.

Check out our video guide below to study our Matthew Perry boss-battle strategies in more detail!
Avoid Perry’s Martial Skill And Critical Hit To Save Health
Matthew Perry is yourfirst enemy with a Martial Skill and Critical Hit. But, believe us, these attacks are surprisingly deadly for your first boss battle. Boss Martial Skills and Critical Hitsrequire perfect timing to counterspark.
Each of Perry’sspecial attacks has clear indicators. However, thepoint of contact is more strictand difficult to pin down. We recommend forgoing countersparks for both the Martial Skill and Critical Hit. So, when you see Perry glow red, run in the opposite direction!

What It Looks Like
Martial Skill
Perry willglow red and draw his sword back. Then, he’ll lunge forward with a downward slash of his sabre.
Critical Hit
Perry willglow red and wield his sword in front of himself while staring you down. Then, he’ll charge in with an upward slash. If the attack connects, Perry will launch you into the air and shoot you several times with his rifle.
Trigger Explosive Kegs With Your Grapple Hook To Deal Tons Of Damage
Studying your environmentis an excellent way to gain an advantage in battle. Lucky for you, your mission aboard the Black Ship has prepared you well in this regard. You’ve already practiced barraging foes with explosives via your grapple hook. And the area of the ship where you’ll fight Perry is chock full of them!
Hurling explosive barrels at Perry has two significant benefits. First, you can perform this attack at amid-to-long range, so it’s pretty safe. Second, Perry willincur the Burn afflictionif the explosive makes contact. This affliction will gradually damage Perry until it wears off.

The explosive barrels are a limited resource. Therefore, you want to guarantee as little misses as possible. Time your grapple hook attacks for opportunities whenPerry is in the corner or distracted by your Blade Twin. He’ll have fewer opportunities to dodge out of the way in these moments.
Attack With Your Rifle When Perry Gets Occupied With Your Blade Twin
Yourally is one of your best assetsin boss battles. After all, there’s strength in numbers. Furthermore, you’ll always have a partner to heal you if the character you’re controlling goes down. However, you may not have considered the benefits of letting your partner take charge for a while.
During our playthrough, we finally defeated Perry once werelinquished control and let our Blade Twin take the reigns. We found the time to heal our character with a medicinal pill and gained the space to land headshots on Perry with our rifle, thus initiating a significant turning point in the battle.
TLDR (and we mean this foreverybattle):You have sub-weapons for a reason. Use them!
Remember that Perry owns a rifle, too. If you see himroll backward into a crouch, he will shoot. Get ready to dodge when this occurs
