There are a few different types of battle inUnicorn Overlord. Main story battles and side quest battles are long and protracted, often featuring surprises and twists halfway through. Generic region battles, on the other hand, are far shorter and serve as quick tests of your strategic prowess. You’ll meet a ton of unique characters completing them, and the Battle for Barbatimo is no exception.

This city is held by Mordon, a Warrior who wields a colossal hammer, and who is backed up by Hoplites, who prove to be a tricky enemy to overcome without the right tools.

Inside Barbatimo during a battle in Unicorn Overlord

This battle is laid out quite simply: the walled city isprotected on all sides by Hoplites surrounded by Mantlets. These are environmental buff items that improve a unit’s physickal defence and last three fights and have the same benefits as a bridge garrison.

The tricky part of this fight is overcoming the mantlet’s defences and dealing with the heavily armoured Hoplite - to do this, you’ll need a Wizard.

Deciding whether or not to spare Mordon in Unicorn Overlord

For this reason, you’ll need to have journeyed north and completedThe Self-Effacing Sorcererside questandrecruited either Auch or a generic Wizard from Fort Veille, which is liberated in that quest. Once you have a Wizard, you may create a formation specifically to deal with this stage, such as this:

Wizard

Cleric

The idea here is thatAlainis primarily a defensive unit, with theWizardproviding most of thefirepower. TheClericis there for healing, as Alain’s defensiveness alone will suffer against Mordon’s might. If you have one, give Alain a Lapis Pendantto improve his defensiveness. Make sure the Wizard is equipped with the Chlorotic staff.

Front Row

Alain

This formation should be enough to deal with both themantled Hopliteunit guarding the entrance to the city andMordon’s Hopliteto boot.

You’ll also wantanother formation that can deal with the generic Axebearer unitsthat begin near the city and finish off the other formations once the Hoplites are down. Sending the main unit to deal with every enemy in the stage is risky in terms of Stamina.

Good characters to include in this backup unit would be aKnight like Clive(Assault Lance is perfect) or aGryphon Knight, who can attack the entire back row at once and is very evasive.

Gryphon Knights can be recruited fromFort Mainteneaut.

How To Beat The Battle Of Barbatimo

This is quite a short battle. To begin, send out your Magic Unit and a backup unit that can deal with the Axebearers. Once the Axebearers are down, send the Magic Unit at theHoplite. Once the Hoplite in the front row is dead, you can send your backup unit in to finish off the other enemies and save on the Magic Unit’s Stamina.

As soon as you enter the city,Mordon will order the other Hoplite units guarding the other entrances to converge on your location. It’s possible to finish Mordon off before either of them reaches you, but the timing can be tricky.

The strategy here is pretty much the same as the one you used to enter the city: all three formations here are guarded byfront-row Hoplites.Use your Magic Unit to destroy those with ease, and thensend in your backup unitwith strong fighters to finish off whoever is left behind.

It’s best toleave Hodrick behindfor this fight - as you’ll learn when you approach Mordon, Warriors are super-effective against Hoplites (like Hodrick) and will destroy them in a very short amount of time.

After beating Mordon, you’ll immediately acquire aWarrior’s Medallion. In addition, you’ll complete the quest, which rewards you with someHonors, a Lapiz Lazuli, and the Iron Helm Mercenaries Heraldryin addition to the usualRenown. A cutscene after the battle will let you choose whether or not yourecruit Mordon.

Should You Recruit Mordon?

If you recruit Mordon, you’ll get a handyWarriorearlier than any other unique Warrior in the game. He also hasthe ability to repair bridges, which allows you to access new areas.

Passing up on Mordon will net you 30 Honors, though this isn’t that handy - Honors are very easy to farm by taking on random encounters and grinding at sigils. Even though Mordon isn’t special (there is another character who can repair bridges for you), it’s worth recruiting him nevertheless.
