InFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, another Protorelic to hunt down means another oddly in-depth mini-game to conquer. While previous Protorelic-related mini-games were fairly simple, the mini-game in the Cosmo Canyon region is a complex strategy game. Similar to Fort Condor, Gears and Gambits asks you to rely on clever tactics to overwhelm your opponent.
Gears and Gambits has a ton of rules that aren’t fully explained from the get-go. Upon getting into the mini-game for the first time, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the various mechanics. Here, we’ve outlined the basics of Gears and Gambits as well as some solid strategies for leading your bots to victory.

Gears And Gambits Overview
In Gears and Gambits, your goal is todefeat the boss in the center before time runs out.If the timer runs out, orif enemies deplete your health by attacking your crystals, it’s game over.
Like Fort Condor, Gears and Gambitsfunctions off of the ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ systemthat goes as follows:

Assigning an elemental Actionimposes that element’s weakness onto your robot.Equipping a robot with multiple elemental actionswill give it additional weaknesses.
Player Units
In Gears and Gambits, you cansummon only three robotsonto the field at thecost of the ATB gauge. Each robot can beprogrammed with various Gambits and Actions.A Gambit determines the target, while Actions determine what your robot will do.
Gambits can also beset to specific circumstances, like if an ally is at less than half health. Once this condition is met, your bot will immediately use the assigned Action.

Actions can affect your robot’shealth, weaknesses, and how much ATB it costs to summon them. You can see how an Action will affectyour bot’s stats in the Player Units menu.
Some Actions also have alimited number of uses.Once an Action runs out of uses, your robot willuse whatever actions it has left.Robots willuse actions depending on their associated Gambitand the order in which they’re set.

Enemy Units
Just like your robots, enemies utilize Gambits and Actionsto attack. By pressing Square, you canassess your enemiesand reveal their equipped Gambits and Actions.
Some enemies have Advanced Actions, which aretriggered after specific conditions are met.You can see what will trigger an Advanced Action by assessing the enemy.Enemies with Advanced Actions are denoted by the number iconsthat appear on top of their health bar.

Cosmo Canyon Region - Phenomenon Intel 1: Planetological Ruins
The first round of Gears and Gambits can be foundin the southeast part of the region. You’ll be able totake the hill nearbyto reach the ruins. Therewill be three Chocobos outsidethe ruins to let you know you’re in the right place.
Gears and Gambits Strategy
For this battle, youcan’t choose the Gambits and Actionsyour robots are programmed with. Each robot is equipped withone elemental attackand one basic attack with infinite uses.
While you can’t program your robots, youcan choose which Portal Skills you want to use.Theydon’t make a huge difference, but the Hybrid Loadout is a great option.Regenga is great for keeping bots alivewhen bosses start using attacks that hit all three lanes.

This round is fairly straightforward, focus onplacing down bots that target the enemy’s weakness.Typically, you shouldplace at least two bots to deal with an enemysince your bots can’t heal yet.
Avoid placing all your bots in a single lane, asfour bots in a single lane will trigger the boss’s Gambit. The boss will thencast Barrier on themselvesto boost their defense.

Cosmo Canyon Region - Phenomenon Intel 2: Empyrean Ruins
The second round of Gears and Gambits is locatedin the northern part of the region. To reach this area, you’ll need this region’s Chocoboto glide across a gap.
When you’ve secured a Chocobo, head over to the Gliding Range 24and fly straight across the gap to reach the mission’s location.

You now have the ability toprogram your robots with Gambits and Actionsas you see fit. verify that you equip each bot with one elemental attack, so that you may target weaknesses.
If programming robots is too overwhelming, you canpress Square after selecting a robot to Auto-Programyour team. you’re able to use the Auto-Program option tocycle through several preset teamsuntil you find one that suits your playstyle.

Have at leastone bot serve as the healer of the groupand equip them with the Cure Shot Action. As for the other two, theybenefit from the Barrier Shot and Bravery Shot Actionsto buff the party.Consider equipping the Cost -20 Actionto make your bots more affordable.
The boss for this roundwill use Phase Shift: Reinforcements at half healthto summon one enemy in each lane. This is when you shoulduse any offensive Portal Skills to take care of reinforcementswhile you wait for the ATB gauge.

Cosmo Canyon Region - Phenomenon Intel 3: Capital Ruins
The third round of Gears and Gambits isin the southern part of the region, close to where the first Phenomenon Intel mission was. Make your wayup through the crumbled ruinsto reach the marked location.
There’s nowan additional slot for programming your robotswith Gambits and Actions. This battle features several flying enemies, so it’sworth equipping the Gravity Shot and Missile Actionsto the new slot you’ve unlocked.
At the beginning of the fight, many strong enemies are thrown your way quickly, soswitch to the Offensive Loadout for Portal Skills. This Loadoutgrants the Aeroga and Comet abilities, which strike hard and have a wide range.
Once a quarter of their health is taken out,the boss will use Phase Shift to change their elemental affinity. At low health, the bosswill use this ability once moreto change their elemental affinity.
Be sure toplace a variety of bots in each lane, so they can target the current weakness.
This boss can also cast Regen twiceto quickly restore their health. You can’t let up on the assault for a second; youneed bots attacking the boss at all timesto prevent them from recovering.
Luckily, after its second use of Regen, there’s no other way for the boss to recover health.
Cosmo Canyon Region - Phenomenon Intel 4: Planetological Ruins
The final round of Gears and Gambits isin the eastern part of the region. You’llneed this region’s Chocoboto reach this Phenomenon Intel mission as well.
Head over to Gliding Range 18and glide toward the direction of the Phenomenon Intel Mission. You’ll finda ledge to land on and an elevator nearbythat will take you up to the mission’s location. There will be several enemies on the way, so prepare for combat.
This battleintroduces Advanced Actionsfor your robots. Just like with enemies, Advanced Actionswill trigger after certain conditionsare met. It’syour choice as to what conditions need to be completedin order to activate the equipped Advanced Action.
Supportive Advanced Actions likeHaste Field and Nullemental Field are key to clearing this battlewith ease.
As for the conditions,‘Survived 30 Seconds’ is the easiest to accomplish.Havingmultiple bots on the field with support-based Advanced Actionswill allow your team to tear through enemies.
Just like with the previous boss, this boss will also change their elemental affinitiesonce portions of their health are taken out. Luckily, having your bots support each other with Advanced Actionswill be enough to claim victory.
