Monopolytokens are the little pieces used to play the game, tracking your progress as you move around the board. The first version of Monopoly had ten tokens, but throughout the years, new pieces have been released. With new Monopoly versions coming out, there are now tons of different token types available.

So, how many tokens are there? Here, we are going to go over the original pieces, as well as how many other pieces you can find out there. First, let’s go over the classic pieces that Monopoly games included in 1937. Yes, Monopoly first came to be in 1937; this humble board game is quite old!

What Were The Original Monopoly Tokens?

There wereten original Monopoly tokens,which you can find listed below.

The early versions of Monopoly didn’t use the typical metal tokens that we see today. Instead, they were oftenmade out of wood.This is because the world in the early 1900s, as we know, was embroiled in several wars.Metal production typically went towards the war effort,so tokens were wood-based during these periods.

Discontinuation Of Original Monopoly Tokens

These pieces didn’t all make it though. By 1942,the Lantern, Purse, and Rocking Horsewere discontinued. In 2000, theCannonwas phased out, and in 2013, we said goodbye to theIron. Finally, in 2017, theBoot and original Thimblemade their final appearance.

Out of the first pieces, only theBattleship, Race Car, and Top Hat remain.

New Pieces Added To Monopoly

The original ten pieces dwindled down to three, but this doesn’t mean that new pieces weren’t added! In 1942,the Scottie Dog, Horse and Rider, and Wheelbarrow were added.The Scottie Dog still remains a token, but the Wheelbarrow left in 2017, and the Horse and Rider left in 2000.

In 1999,the Sack of Money made a brief appearance, lasting until 2007.

Four new pieces were added post-2010 as well. This includes the Cat (introduced in 2013), as well as theT-Rex, Rubber Duck, and Penguin,which were all added in 2017. At this time, the T-Rex was discontinued and interestingly,replaced with a new version of the Thimble.

Different Versions Of Monopoly

In addition to the normal version of Monopoly, there aredozens of special versions.This is, of course, far too much to list. Some popular versions includeFortniteMonopoly,Disney VilliansMonopoly,SpongebobMonopoly, andDoctor WhoMonopoly.

There are a number ofboth licensed and unlicensed Monopoly games, with each version having a unique play on the pieces. For example, in Spongebob Monopoly, the tokens are the characters in the show, such as Spongebob himself and Patrick.

For this, we are going to exclude these unique pieces; if not, our total would soar into the hundreds!

Monopoly Go! Board Game

Monopoly has also spawned a popular mobile game in 2023 called Monopoly Go!. This game shook up the gameplay mechanics of the board game, optimizing them for a mobile game. Now, this mobile game has beenturned back into a board game;we’ve come full circle.

The Monopoly Go! board game only comes withfour tokens, with one of them being new.In this board game, you’ll get the following pieces.

So, what is Monopoly Man? This seems to be alittle chibi version of the game’s mascot.We’ve only seen this piece in Monopoly Go!, but in the future, it may even make its way into the main rotation of tokens. For now though,we’ll count this as a token for a special version of the game.

80th Anniversary Monopoly (Special Edition)

In 2015, we were also given a special edition of Monopoly,celebrating 80 years of the game.This edition came with the eight pieces that were used throughout the years.

The 80th anniversary edition of Monopoly waslimited,so we are considering this a (unique) special edition.

There is also an85th-anniversary editionwith gold pieces including Sunglasses, a Jet, and a Wristwatch. This version seems to focus on luxury.

How Many Monopoly Tokens Are There In Total?

So, there areeight current monopoly tokens(nine, if you count Monopoly Man), but in total, there have been over18 that have come and sometimes, gone.When you purchase a new version of Monopoly, it will come with the eight tokens mentioned above, but if you get a second-hand copy,you may come across discontinued pieces that aren’t produced anymore.
