The world ofDragon’s Dogma 2is vast, and the Arisen is an important figure politically. Veterans of the series are familiar with the role, while newcomers may not be. Nonetheless a better understanding of who the Arisen is in the grand scheme of things and what they are can make the game all the more enjoyable.
From dragons to politics, the Arisen has a lot on their plate. While you’re still just a regular person, you’re also meant to be a hero of legend. Here’s everything you need to know about the Arisen to follow along and understand your role in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

How Does One Become The Arisen?
Becoming the Arisen isn’t easy, and it’s quite painful. The Arisen is created when one is chosen by a great dragon. This usually happens when someone directly confronts a dragon in combat, often when said individual is protecting someone else from certain death. Showing impeccable courage and willpower, the dragon takes notice.
When the dragon has chosen someone, it will devour their heart. While this would normally kill any other mortal, the chosen is revitalized with new life and the unimaginable power that comes with it.

While the dragon holds their heart, the Arisen is technically immortal and will not age so long as the dragon lives.
These so-called gifts grant the Arisen an edge in an otherwise cruel world. Channeling their power and skill allows them to tackle almost any foe, making them a true challenge to best.

Despite the strength and vitality granted to them by the dragon, they are not invulnerable. They can still fall in battle, so learning how to hold their own is important.
Pawns will travel through the Rift to follow and support the Arisen in many worlds.
Why Does The Arisen Become The Sovran?
Vermund is a kingdom ruled by a noble line of humans where each generation produces the Sovran. The Sovran themselves are actually Arisen that have slain the dragon that stole their heart.
They are made the ruler of Vermund due to their bravery and skill, taking the place of the last Sovran that slew a dragon.
This keeps the cycle from growing stagnant, though as learned in Dragon’s Dogma 2, there are those who would try to change the course of fate by altering the line of succession or faking their status as the Arisen.
What Is The Arisen’s Connection To The Dragon?
The Arisen’s connection to the dragon is a neverending cycle. A dragon will seek out one with a powerful will and notable courage, then devour their heart. This sets the chosen one on the path of the Arisen, complete with a wicked scar that marks them as such.
Seneschal is essentially god, acting as the guardian of the world, though they are a previous Arisen that ascended and fulfilled their destiny.
So long as the dragon holds the Arisen’s heart, the chosen ones will not age or get sick. The Arisen’s power will continue to grow as time goes on. They can only be felled in battle, which means that, technically, some Arisen will live for a very long time.
The dragon can also communicate with the Arisen so long as the dragon holds their heart. Drakes and lesser dragons can also communicate with the Arisen and issue challenges to prove their worth.
If and when the dragon is slain, any Arisen who hasn’t reclaimed their heart will age the amount of time their heart was kept by the dragon.
The Arisen is destined to slay the dragon and, potentially, challenge the Seneschal to see if they are strong enough to rule over the world. This is a tall order, and thus only a handful of Arisen will make it to that point.
Once they challenge the Seneschal, there are a few outcomes:
If the Arisen fails, they are then turned into a dragon and sent to seek out a more worthy chosen to defeat the Seneschal and begin the loop anew. Some Arisen even become drakes or other lesser dragons.
This is why some dragons will taunt the Arisen or challenge them so that they can be released from their fate.
you may also hear some dragons refer to the Arisen with familiarity, as they were once like them before they failed.
If the Arisen succeeds, they can usurp the current Seneschal by releasing them with the Godsbane. There, they rule until the time comes for them to send out a dragon in search of their own replacement, and the cycle begins again with new life to keep it going.
