Helldivers 2’s lead developer Johan Pilestedt seems open to a crossover withDestiny, saying that it would “make sense” for the setting. He even taggedBungiein his comment, perhaps in a bid to see if the studio would be open to arranging some kind of collaboration for the two games.
This comment was made in response to some fan-madeDestiny 2armour that’s based on the aesthetic of Helldivers 2. However, given Pilestedt’s response, it’s possible that this crossover won’t always be limited to fan creations, at least if Bungie is open to the idea as well.
“Super cool! I love these kinds of crossovers that make sense to the world. Right Bungie?” replies Pilestedt, seemingly giving the idea his stamp of approval. As the CEO of Helldivers 2’s developer, Arrowhead, he could make it happen if Bungie approves of the idea too.
With that being said,Sonywould likely have to approve this collab, since it owns Bungie. It doesn’t own Arrowhead, but it has published both Helldivers games, so it would only stand to benefit from a crossover between the two games. We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of this, but given Helldivers 2’s wildly unexpected success, we can expect to see Sony open to these ideas, making the most of its huge playerbase.
However, this large playerbase has proven to be both a blessing and a curse. Since launch, players have reported long wait times to get into the game, as servers frequently reached max capacity. This capacity has since beenincreased to 700,000which,alongside the introduction of an AFK timer, seems to have alleviated the issue significantly. In fact, the lead dev justsaidthat yesterday was the game’s best Friday since launch. We’ll have to wait and see if the weekend runs smoothly too, especially as the playerbase only continues to grow.
Whatever Helldivers 2’s future looks like, it isn’t likely that anXboxport will be part of it. Sony isn’t known for sharing the games it publishes, andXbox boss Phil Spencer’s disappointment about the console exclusivelywould suggest that there aren’t any talks about getting it on Microsoft’s platform. The first Helldivers game was never ported to Xbox either, although that had a much smaller playerbase.
In the meantime, Helldivers 2 is available on PlayStation 5 and PC.
