Fortnite’sTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlescollaboration just introduced a bunch of new skins and items that include references from throughout the series' history.

Just a few months ago, Fortnite received one of its best collaborations yet (spoken as a TMNT fan) adding all four heroes in a half shell to the Island alongside April O’Neil. That first round of skins was already well-received by us shellheads, with some claiming that the designs for Leo, Mikey, Donnie, and Raph were some of the best they’d ever seen.

As it turns out, those skins were just the beginning of the TMNT collaboration as, a few months later, Epic has added even more content. Not only are Shredder and Splinter coming to the game, but we’ve also got some new items for each of the Turtles' weapons and several other new things that make this event more than just the addition of a few skins.

The latest new additions to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collaboration do more than just beef up the series' presence, though. As pointed out by clear TMNT superfan and Twitter user EvieDLuna, the latest update also has a ton of references to the wider TMNT series across a bunch of different generations and mediums.

For starters, the event being titled “Ooze War” is a clear nod to the “City At War” arc from the comic, which heavily features Shredder. Speaking of Shredder, his design seems to be based on the version used in the IDW comics, with the same white eyes and silver and red colour palette. Then there’s Super Shredder, who is of course a reference to the second live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.

Perhaps the best reference of all is thatFortnite somehow got TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman to do the loading screen art, which is GLORIOUS.

Moving on from Shredder, we have Splinter, who has one of the most surprising references of the bunch. If you talk to him while using the Leonardo skin, he will say, “I made you leader for one simple reason. You asked.”, which is a reference to a similar scene from the underrated 2012 series. His design also seems close to the 2003 show (minus the black eyes), as do all of the Turtles.

It’s not just Shredder and Splinter that have references, either, as the Turtles' gear is also a shellebration of TMNT history. The blimp Glider is a reference to the Turtle Blimp toy from the ’80s, while the hoverboard vehicle reskin seems to be inspired by the ones used by the Turtles in Turtles in Time.

That’s already a shell of a lot of references, but that’s just scraping the surface of everything that EvieDLuna and other TMNT fans managed to point out. It was clear that Fortnite has a lot of love for the series already, but it’s nice to see just how much history there is here.
