Update: 09-06-2025 19:43GMT - Lionsgate has now also releaseda sneak peek of the Borderlands movie, confirming that the first trailer will drop tomorrow. Original story follows.
People Magazine just shared our first look at theBorderlandsmovie, featuring Cate Blanchett’s Lilith, Kevin Heart’s Roland, Florian Munteanu’s Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis' Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt’s Tiny Tina, and Jack Black’s Claptrap.
The Borderlands movie was announced nearly ten years ago in 2015 and has since undergone several changes in director, even reportedly having ten writers in that time. The film is now helmed by Eli Roth (Hostel, Thanksgiving) withreshoots being undertaken by Tim Miller(Deadpool) after writer Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Last of Us) had his name removed from the credits, instead using the pseudonym Joe Crombie.
The movie wasreported to be in post-production hell last July, and little has surfaced regarding its state since then. But after nine years, it’s finally set to release on August 9.
The story follows Lilith as she returns to her home planet Pandora in search of Atlas' missing daughter. She teams up with Roland, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Tannis, and Claptrap to complete her mission, all of whom we see pictured above, peering into a manhole in a shot that’s incredibly reminiscent of the Holes poster.
We still haven’t seen Benjamin Byron Davis (Red Dead Redemption 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as Marcus orHaley Bennett (The Magnificent Seven, The Girl on the Train),however. The latter is playing a completely original character not from the games, so we know very little about what her role will be. All we have to go off right now is that she has ties to Lilith.
But we might see more of the movie as soon as tomorrow, as a new trailer is reportedly dropping then.
While this is the first official reveal of the characters in action (not counting the vague silhouette group shot), we did geta behind-the-scenes look at Lilith last year.
Jamie Lee Curtis also shared a look at Blanchett’s Lilith in 2021, captioned, “Welcome to Borderlands […] our legendary heroine, psycho blasting, vault hunting, vixen with a bad attitude and two Oscars to add to the bada**ery in her tool belt, the once and future queen of EVERYTHING.”
