After having teased Aerith’s death at every opportunity since the game’s reveal,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthhas seemingly just hinted that she might actually survive her encounter with Sephiroth.
Just one week after the last State of Playgave us our first proper look at Death Stranding 2: On The Beach,Silent Hill: The Short Message, andseveral other games, PlayStation already has another showcase for us that specifically focuses onFinal Fantasy7 Rebirth. Although we were all expecting to see more of the game’s combat in action, we did at least get a few surprises, including a hint that Aerith might survive her encounter with Sephiroth after all.
Ever since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was first announced, pretty much every Final Fantasy fan has been wondering the same thing -will Aerith survive her encounter with Sephiroth at the Forgotten Capital now that her fate has been rewritten?Square Enix has been teasing the big moment for a long time nowand although most signs have pointed to her meeting the same unfortunate end, the State of Play presentation has just given fans a tiny bit of hope.
Towards the end of the trailer that played before the big gameplay deep dive, Cloud and the rest of the gang can be seen gathered at the Forgotten Capital in front of Sephiroth. Just as Sephiroth is shown plunging his sword into the ground, Cloud is shown screaming and striking his sword, seemingly countering the attack and hopefully saving whoever it was aiming for from being skewered.
Although it’s possible that Cloud’s counter didn’t work, this scene seems to suggest that he managed to stop the attack and prevent what is most likely Aerith from being killed by it. Sephirothcouldjust end up attacking again or managing to break through it, but considering how Cloud was blindsided by the attack in the original game, it seems to tease that Aerith might end up surviving this time around.
Although most of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth State of Play was kept as a surprise, there was one major part of it that managed to get spoiled long before the showcase took place - the shadow-dropped demo. Although this was already hinted at by insiders for the last State of Play and predicted by fans long before tonight’s showcase,PlayStation actually already leaked the demo and its contents yesterday, only confirming everyone’s suspicions.
