Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthplayers have a big problem with its confusing respawn menu and how poorly explained its many, manyoptions to restart are.

Ignoring how bloated the open-world can be andhow overwhelming the number of minigames is, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth generallyseems to be a big hit with fans and a successful sequel to Remake. Even thoughmost of the reactions to the game seem to be very positive so far(unless you take adeep dive into how the shipping community is doing), there are a few notable smaller issues that have cropped up.

We’ve covered a few of these issues before, like the performance mode being a bit blurry and needing to be officially updated after launch, but one of the strangest problems that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has is with its respawn menu. In most games, when you die during a boss battle, the options you’re presented with are very clear, but that’s certainly not the case in Cloud’s latest adventure.

For some strange reason, Square Enix decided to overload the player with choices when they die in Rebirth, with options such as “Retry from Before Current Battle”, “Retry from This Battle”, and “Retry from Before Battle”. That’s when it’s not also asking you if you want to “Retry from Checkpoint”.

The overwhelming number of options isn’t the only problem here, as the way that they’re explained is also pretty confusing. You’d think that respawning from the last checkpoint would mean placing you at the last auto-save,but it actually means the in-game checkpoints that crop up a lot less oftenthan auto-saves do and usually result in you losing lots of progress.

I can vouch for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s respawn options being a total mess, as I once picked to restart from a checkpoint and ended up losing hours of open-world progress. Won’t be doing that again.

It seems that a lot of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players are struggling to understand what these options are actually allowing the player to do, resulting in the wrong thing being chosen and multiphase battles accidentally being restarted. This occasional frustration is being expressed over on the Final Fantasy subreddit, with one player even saying that Rebirth was a 10/10 until the infamous menu popped up.

Although these menu options do end up making a bit of sense with some trial and error, getting to that point does occasionally cause progress to be lost over something that should be incredibly simple. Here’s hoping Square Enix adds some explainers in a later patch.
