Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthfans think that Red XIII is faking his deep voice, as a clip from the most recent trailer shows his voice cracking and going much higher-pitched.

As great as it’s going to be to reunite with Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Barret, by far the mostexciting characters in Rebirth are the new playable ones like Cait Sith, Sephiroth (however briefly) and, most notably, Red XIII. Not only will we finally get a chance to control him after he was a non-playable party member in Remake, but we’re also going to learn a whole lot more about his backstory.

Anyone who has played the originalFinal Fantasy 7will know what we’re all going to learn at Cosmo Canyon, and it’s something that has been teased several times by developers leading up to the release of Rebirth. The most notable example of this is when Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, revealed that there are two versions of every quest to account for Red XIII’s character change to Nanaki after Cosmo Canyon.

Since that was revealed, fans have been wondering how Red XIII is going to change when he finally accepts himself for who he is Some have thought that other characters will simply refer to him as Nanaki, but the latest trailer might have just revealed that it’s going to be something a lot bigger - a change to his voice.

Over on Twitter, HatokTalk pointed out an interesting moment from the most recent Rebirth trailer, which has Aerith and Tifa showing off their new outfits to Red XIII. In response to being asked how they look, Red XIII’s voice noticeably cracks and goes much higher-pitched, which leads to him coughing and looking embarrassed. This makes sense considering he’s actually a lot younger than he seems and is basically a child in his species.

It’s worth noting that Red XIII’s dialect actually changed after the events of Cosmo Canyon in the Japanese release of Final Fantasy 7, which seems to be what’s happening here too.

This seems to be implying that Red XIII’s typically deep voice is actually fake and that he’s putting it on in front of everyone to seem much older and more mature than he actually is. Beyond being the cutest thing ever, it suggests that once Red XIII has accepted himself as Nanaki, he might drop the act and speak naturally for the rest of the game, explaining what Hamaguchi meant by there being two versions for each quest.
