One of the biggest selling points for video game consoles is their exclusive games. For example, if you want to play theSuper Mario Bros. games, you must buy theNintendo Switch. If you want to playUncharted games, you need aPlayStationconsole. There are other reasons to buy certain consoles, though, such as friends and communities.
Video games are becoming more expensive to make and their development times are increasing. That means many video games need new ways to monetize themselves, increase their price of purchase, or reach players who haven’t been able to play them before. There are many reasons some games should be multi-platform.
8Mario + Rabbids (Series)
Mario and the characters associated with the Mario Bros. series have forever been locked or trapped on Nintendo’s platforms. However, theMario + Rabbidsgames were made byUbisoft, not Nintendo.
If the Mario + Rabbids games launched on non-Nintendo platforms, it could serve as a taster of sorts for the larger Mario Bros. games. It could then convince non-Nintendo and previously non-Mario fans to buy a Nintendo console and the Mario games on it. It would also be nice to have a fun Mario game available to all players, regardless of their console.
7Quantum Break
Quantum Breakwas developed by Remedy, the same developer that made theMax PayneandAlan Wakegames. What made Quantum Break different is that it was made exclusively for the Xbox platform. It was a unique mix of a video game and a web-based television show, too.
Remedy is not owned byXboxor Microsoft. It’s an independent developer, but Microsoft has the rights to Quantum Break. Remedy has since gained a lot of success in making cross-platform games likeControl. Limiting Quantum Break to one console also limits its reach and potential. Making it available elsewhere would be best for everyone.
6Sunset Overdrive
Similarly to Quantum Break,Sunset Overdrivewas made by an independent studio at the time, Insomniac Games. But it was made to be an exclusive to the Xbox family of consoles. It launched to a lot of acclaim but didn’t garner a large enough audience to merit a sequel.
Since then, Insomniac has acquired the rights to the game, but they are now owned by Sony and PlayStation. That means they could publish Sunset Overdrive elsewhere, but for unknown reasons, they have not. Launching it on other consoles, after their name and reputation has grown significantly thanks toSpider-ManandRatchet & Clank, could give Sunset Overdrive the love and attention it deserved.
5Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Final Fantasy 7 Remakewas initially conceived as a multipart, elongated remakeof the famed game. It was also never supposed to be an exclusive game to the PlayStation family of consoles. The marketing and promotion never officially said it was exclusive. Statements and quotes since then have supported this fact, too.
Other Final Fantasy games are available outside the PlayStation consoles, but since the success of 7 Remake, the series andSquare Enixhave seemingly struck a deal for exclusivity. Like many of the games on this list, making it available elsewhere would make it an even greater hit.
4Demon’s Souls
Demon’s Soulshelped start the Souls-borne craze. It andBloodbornemade difficult, gothic-horror themed games popular. Since then, several games like it have gone on to have even greater success and acclaim, likeDark SoulsandElden Ring.
However, Demon’s Souls was exclusive to the PlayStation 3 console for so long. It has since had a remake launched, which capitalized on thenewfound appreciation of games like it. But, it is still exclusive to PlayStation consoles. As the game that started it all, it would be nice if more people could experience it.
3Uncharted (Series)
The Uncharted series is one of Sony andNaughty Dogs’ flagship brands. There were four mainline games, plus a spinoff for the PlayStation Vita. The initial trilogy has since been remastered and collected into one package. But it’s only on PlayStation… and PC.
The series is currently on hiatus, or hold, or perhaps even finished. Launching the Uncharted collection on other consoles would give it new life and help promote and build hype for a potential future game in the series.
2Halo Infinite
Halo Infinitelaunched to a mostly positive reception that then fell to middling and, in some instances, poor. It was released in two parts. The main, story-driven campaign. And themultiplayercomponent.
The multiplayer component was designed and conceived to be an expansive, constantly growing game. It was, in many ways, a game as a service. But, the audience has since dropped off. Launching the multiplayer component on other consoles would help build an audience again, and it could encourage players to buy an Xbox console and experience the other Halo games on offer.
1Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimateis a cross-gaming fighting game. It features characters, musical tracks, and locations from many other games, series, and brands. It’s a feat very few games have ever even dreamed of achieving. But it’sonly available on Nintendoconsoles.
If the game went multi-platform, it would make Super Smash Bros. a series that truly encapsulates all consoles and video games. It would present possibilities for other, non-Nintendo characters to finally join the roster, and it would bolster its online community by adding more players. Making it multi-platform just makes sense.
