Dungeons & Dragonshas always been one of, if not the most popular, TTRPG of all time. But in recent years, it reached a new peak thanks to the Internet. Now with big-name media like theCritical Roletelevision show andD&D podcasts, we can truly say that the game has hit the mainstream.

As well as this, because the game has been around so long, the next wave of Hollywood includes many celebrities who love and have played Dungeons & Dragons. You might just be surprised as to how many people in the entertainment industry like to sit around and roll dice, so here are just a few big-name celebrities who love to do just that.

Below we’ve added more famous Hollywood stars and icons to the conversation, with some that might also come as a surprise.

1Matt Mercer

Of course first on the list is the one and only Matt Mercer. An acclaimed voice actor (who you probably recognizefrom voicing characters from countless roles), he has played TTRPGs for years and is especially known for being the incredible Dungeon Master of the hit show Critical Role.

Whether it’s releasing his own homebrew subclasses and items or continuing to add more to the world of Exandria, Mercer is clearly a huge fan of Dungeons & Dragons, and his show has helped get more people into the game.

True Blood, Magic Mike, And The Host Of Deal Or No Deal Island

Known for his roles in Magic Mike and True Blood, Joe Manganiello is proof that it isn’t the stereotypical image of a skinny nerd from the 90s who just plays Dungeons & Dragons, but that anybody can be a nerd and enjoy their time adventuring across the lands with friends. He is a huge fan of Dungeons & Dragons and, at one point, evenwanted to make a movieabout it.

From guest starring on Critical Role to running his own game for other fellow Hollywood actors, Joe clearly has a lot of love for the game (even once showing off his own epic game room in his house), and we can only imagine how great of a Dungeon Master he must be.

Supernatural, The Guild, Guild Wars 2, And Mystery Science Theater 3000

If you’ve seen the CW’s Supernatural, you’ll know Felicia Day as Dean and Sam Winchester’s hunting companion, Charlie. Day is quite a fan of tabletop roleplaying, particularly D&D and Magic: The Gathering, as she is also the creator of the web channel Geek & Sundry, which would host Matt Mercer’s Critical Role until 2019, along with other live-streamed tabletop games and interviews.

Her passion for gaming also led her to create the web series The Guild, which centers around characters who form an online guild in an MMORPG video game, and she voiced video game characters such asAthena in Stray Gods, Violet in Monster Prom, and Zojja in Guild Wars 2. Felicia Day also starred in the off-Broadway play, Dungeons & Dragons: The Twenty-Sided Tavern.

Jon Favreau is known for his comedy films with Vince Vaughn, collaborations with Disney, including The Mandalorian, the MCU,and live-action Disney remakes, as well as hosting the Netflix reality cooking series The Chef Show, which was inspired by his 2014 movie. Like most filmmakers who have had experience playing D&D, Favreau often credits the TTRPG as giving him the necessary tools for his success.

In a 2017 interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Favreau talked about his love for D&D and got into the specifics of how he still uses the skills he learned from it across every aspect of his productions, whether it’s fully CGI movies like The Lion King or a superhero Marvel movie.

5Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Inception, TDKR, (500) Days Of Summer, Snowden, 50/50, Looper, And Knives Out

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in the most recent 2024 sequel installment of Beverly Hills Cop alongside Eddie Murphy and is known for portraying Edward Snowden and Tommy Solomon in 3rd Rock From the Sun, as well as his films with Rian Johnsonand Christopher Nolan. He also started the collaborative community web project HitRecord, which turned into the Emmy-winning HitRecord on TV.

In a 2018 Geek & Sundry interview with host Erika Ishii, Joseph Gordon-Levitt discussed both his love for D&D and Magic: The Gathering, saying he enjoys Dungeons & Dragons due to its emphasis on players getting to tell stories collaboratively and that, in the end, “there is no product.“And in a 2018 Facebook post, Gordon-Levitt shared that he played an assassin Dark Elf character named Fury.

Creator Of Community, Rick And Morty, Krapopolis, And Strange Planet

Famed Community sitcom creator and the adult animation icon behind Rick and Morty, Dan Harmon, also dabbles in some Dungeons & Dragons. In fact, Dan Harmon took his passion for animation and roleplaying to create the hybrid web series called HarmonQuest, where Dan Harmon and his celebrity guests gather around to play a fantasy TTRPG game before a live audience while cutting in animated scenes of their adventure.

In a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harmon says he began playing D&D somewhere around his early teens, at 12 or 13. And like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, when asked what he enjoys the most about D&D, Harmon claims that it’s the “incentivization of collaborative, spontaneous storytelling.”

SNL, Shrek, Austin Powers, Wayne’s World, And The Cat In The Hat

Comedic actor Mike Myers, known for being the voice of Shrek, the character actor behind Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard, and Wayne Campbell, and now returning to SNL in 2025 to parody Elon Musk, also happens to be a fan of Dungeons & Dragons. He even took part in the 2006 Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Game Day.

At that same 2006 D&D Game Day event, Myers was also joined by Robin Williams and Vin Diesel (another fellow actor and D&D fan who you’ll hear more about below). On his IMDb Trivia page, Mike Myers also shared that playing Dungeons & Dragons helped him create his SNL sketchLothar of the Hill People.

Ratatouille, A.P. Bio, The Goldbergs, The King Of Queens, And Veep

Another famous comedian and actor with an affinity and knowledge of D&D is Patton Oswalt. You’ve seen him on shows like A.P. Bio, Two and a Half Men, The King of Queens, or heard his voice in The Goldbergs, BoJack Horseman, Ratatouille, and Hulu and Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. He’s also Felicia Day’s co-star on Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000.

In a 2018 interview with Stephen Colbert on his late-night show (a fellow D&D-playing celeb), Oswalt and Colbert discussedtheir favorite copies and editionsof the roleplaying game. Oswaltalso shared a picture of himself in his sixth-grade D&D clubon social media, captioning it “You’re welcome, ladies” (in all caps).

Scream, Five Nights At Freddy’s, And Scooby-Doo’s Live-Action Shaggy

That’s right, the one and only Matthew Lillard, with the impressive acting range that can play a killer in Scream to the iconic Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, is another great fan of D&D. He is a founder of a company that creates dice and other merch for the tabletop RPG known as Beadle & Grimm’s Pandemonium Warehouse.

Lillard has been playing since he was 21 years old and has been playing ever since, appearing on streaming shows and even launching a D&D-inspired whiskey known as Quest’s End.

The famous broadcaster Anderson Cooper has a self-admitted obsession with the game, even talking about one of his characters who was an elven thief that he mourned for after they died during one of the games. Although not much is known about Cooper and his own games, it’s still incredible how passionate he clearly is about the game.

Anderson Cooper spoke much about his love for Dungeons & Dragons on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where he goes into more detail about his character and how much he loves the game.
