Even though the era of themed consoles has largely been left in the past, there have still been examples during this current generation.Nintendohas released themed Switches for games likeAnimal CrossingandTears of the Kingdom, whilethe Spider-Man 2 covers for PS5sold out almost immediately and may stay that way forever.Xboxhas kept a foot in both worlds, releasing themed consoles anda Starfield wrap for your Series X, and later this week, it will add aSpongeBob SquarePantsconsole to the former.
An iconic square-shaped character with multiple games available to play on theSeries X, you’d have thought this was a partnership we’d have seen before now. Technically it is. In 2021,Xbox gave away a one-of-a-kind SpongeBon Series X. This new one is different, not only in design but also in that there will be more than one of them and you won’t need to rely on winning a sweepstake to call it your own.

Xbox announced and showed off its SpongeBob Series Xon Monday, revealing that it will cost $699 and comes bundled with a matching controller starring other SpongeBob characters as well as a copy ofNickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2. Available at Best Buy at 11 am EST on Jul 03, 2025, it unfortunately won’t be as simple as checking the site after that time and grabbing the SpongeBob bundle should you want to pick one up.
If you are quite taken with the limited edition Series X and you’d like to own one, you will need to do so throughthe Best Buy mobile app. The console will be sold exclusively through the app from the time/date above and the wording in Xbox’s reveal suggests the stock is minimal and isn’t expected to be around for long. The SpongeBob Series X’s Best Buy exclusivity also means only those of you in the US can buy one when release day arrives later this week.
That a SpongeBob Series X has been released, even though not identical to the sweepstake one, fuels hope that some of the other one-of-a-kind consoles Xbox has given away this generation might get the same treatment. Bluey was turned into a Series X last year, and Xbox’s latest sweepstake, which is still open, featuresa Palworld Series S with four controllers, each of which features one of the game’s Pals.
