Baldur’s Gate 3is an insatiably thirsty game, with a wide variety of romantic partners to pursue, whether that be on the journey for an everlasting relationship, or for a bit of a quickie. At this point, it may be impossible to play through Baldur’s Gate 3 on your first run without being romantically approached by someone, but it seems like there are quite a few players out there who wish the game put as much effort into its platonic relationships as it does its spicier ones.
Reddit user Rubydactly raised this point on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit a few days ago, explaining that while they love all the game’s special romantic interactions between party members, they feel that there should be a few more platonic interactions where your player character and another party member just chill out as best buds.
Just like in many games with romance options, there are special scenes that let you hang out with your favorite characters, but it seems like a few would like to have non-romantic versions of these scenes as well. For example, Fossiliz3d wishes that you could just go to the restaurant with arlach without it being a date, or teach Shadowheart how to swim and teach Wyll to dance without things getting spicy.
Add in additional platonic dialogue with all companions. Seriously would improve the characters immensely. BioWare knew this.
One series that is often brought up quite a lot in the thread isMass Effect, another very thirsty series that allows you to romance a wide variety of characters, but also has missions and scenes you can undertake to grow closer to characters without needing to strip down to the skivvies. Garrus is brought up as a good example, as not only is he extremely suave, but he can also be an absolute bro if that’s the direction you want to take your relationship with him.
Of course, there are a few memorable platonic interactions with characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, such as sitting and watching the stars with Gale, or getting a big bear hug from Karlach, but there is a clear desire for simple friendships to be considered as much as romantic relationships. While it’s fun to play the raunchy game, bang the bear, and have a wonderful time, spare a thought for those that aren’t really a fan of stripping down to the buff and would rather go to the tavern and have a gossip with Shadowheart.
