Baldur’s Gate 3has 11 playable species, from drow to githyanki to dragonborn, but given how many exist inDungeons & Dragons, there were always going to be favourites left out. Luckily, the modding community is hard at work onbringing an even wider range of options to the game.

Cue cobalt_owl, a modder who announced last week on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit that they are adding tabaxi to the game. They’re the khajiit of D&D, humanoid cats from the Maztica jungles west of Faerûn.

Not only are tabaxi cat-like, but they’re also taller than most humans (standing at six to seven feet) and are incredible climbers and swimmers. They also make for good rogues because of their innate talent for surprise attacks. However, clans do have berserker warriors, AKA blood-stalkers.

cobalt_owl shared a picture of a tabaxi Tav in-game and in the character creator, giving us a taste of what to expect. They plan to add “different texture options in the final version”, tabaxi-specific dialogue “if it’s doable”, and even other tabaxi NPC to “make the race feel more like a natural part of the world.”

Like any other species in-game, tabaxi will have unique bonuses. Fitting for a feline, they’ll have darkvision and fall damage resistance. cobalt_owl also plans to implement speed burst and unarmed damage bonuses from 5E “if the engine sans official modding tool allows for it.”

There will definitely be multiple selectable fur patterns and possibly multiple head shapes. That’s in addition to being able to select all of the regular hair and eye colour options.

cobalt_owl has not said if their mod will have sub-species yet, but it’s worth noting that tabaxi can take on different names depending on their fur and region. For example, there are leopard folk and jaguar folk. They also have their own language (Payit) and worship their own deities, the Cat lord, Tezca, and Nula.

As with any mod, this will only be available for PC, butLarian Studios is working to bring mod support to consoles, so perhaps Xbox and PlayStation players will get their hands on playable tabaxi one day too.
