We’re still waiting onBaldur’s Gate 3’s physical release, following its hugely successful digital-only launch. Now, we have a better idea of what might be taking so long - it’s hard to cram such a big RPG onto a disc.
In fact, it could be released on up to four discs. This comes fromLarian’s head of publishing, Michael Douse, who says that the physical release onXboxcould include four discs, not the initially advertised three, although this hasn’t been confirmed just yet.
Right now, Douse says that it’s just the Xbox version that’s likely to get a four-disc release, but admits that it’s a “very dynamic” situation that’s open to change. In a reply, he adds that thePlayStationversion will only be spread across two discs, something that’s much more typical of a big open-world RPG like Baldur’s Gate 3.
We still don’t have a date for when these physical copies will be shipped out. The only launch window we were given was Q1 2024, and if this hasn’t been pushed back, this would mean we can expect it to ship this month. But as we still await updates, it’s possible we’ll have to wait a little longer than that. Especially if the amount of discs needed to get the game working on Xbox is still being decided.
The physical release comes as part ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s Deluxe Edition run, which was announced back in November last year. It’ll set you back €79.99, but it comes with the physical release of the game, a physical release of the soundtrack, a map, stickers, patches, a poster, and a new game box that’s in the same style as the first twoBaldur’s Gatereleases.
While we don’t have the pre-order figures for the Deluxe Edition, there’s a good chance that it’s performed well. Larian recently revealed thatBaldur’s Gate 3 has over ten million players, and among that playerbase, there’s likely to be more than a few fans that wouldn’t mind having the game sat on their shelf. Right now though, you’ll have to get the game digitally if you want to play, either through the PlayStation and Xbox stores on console, or Steam and GOG on PC.
