Baldur's Gate 3 Changes Gortash's Letters To "Better Align With His Tone"

Baldur’s Gate 3recently changedGortash’sletters in Hotfix 16, making him sound less like a supervillain, but still threatening. A fan emailed Larian Studios to ask if this was a bug, and the support team replied, clarifying that the change was made to “better align with his tone throughout the game”.

Here’s a snippet from one of the original letters Gorttash sent to Franc Peartree that you can find in Act 3:

Weapon distribution continues like a parent saving their drowning child:swimmingly[…] I do love you, Franc. I love any man willing to birth a little more slithering, wet malice into the world. By sending out my weapons, putting them in groping, willing fingers, you’ve done just that.

For comparison, here’s a quote from one of the new letters, “That, Mr Peartree, was the carrot. I often find it makes an excellent bedfellow to the stick. Consider your position. A less-than-scrupulous set of connections doesn’t just make you valuable to me, it would also make you invaluable to any number of upstart City Watchmen or Flaming Fist ready to make rank. It would really be a terrible tragedy for such a bright potential to be extinguished in this way.”

Despite Larian’s reasoning for changing Gortash’s letter, fans aren’t too happy with the update. “Old Gortash letters gave him so much personality,"@mintsoir tweeted. “‘Lovely corner you’ve winnowed yourself, man of your means. Ilikeyour house’ is such a fun turn of phrase… I don’t know why they changed it”.

“I do think it’s kind of weird because his toneis aweird guy who would send unsettlingly flirty letters to his arms dealer,"@Emmi_shane added. “If you kill Orin first, doesn’t he invite you up to his office, and everything has aweirdly flirty undertone? ‘We could be good for each other’”.

“Huh. Gotta be honest, the Peartree letters added so much colour to Gortash that implicitly added layers to other interactions you have with him,"@MellieDM said. “Odd thing to change so far post-launch, especially without it being in patch notes. The new letters seem so bland in comparison?”

Of course,moddershave already worked the letters back into the game. All you have to do - provided you’re playing on PC - is download"Slithering Wet Malice Restored”. Then voila, you get creepy Gortash creeping about again.
