WWE 2K24has a lot going for it, as the gameplay is very smooth, and the visuals are impressive. Yet, this wouldn’t mean much if the match types weren’t any good. After all, you don’t just want to play regular one-on-one matches all the time. Thankfully, WWE 2K24 has a slew of excellent match types for you to enjoy.

There is a lot of variation to them, too. For example, there are plenty of multi-man options, team-based bouts, and exciting versions of one-on-one contests. Some are brand new to the series, while others have been around for a while. The following lot, though, are the stand outs.

8Ambulance Match

Match Rules

It is a one-on-one contest where the goal is to throw your opponent in an Ambulance and shut the door.

The Ambulance match is a new addition to the 2K series. The concept is simple, but since shutting the ambulance doors is the same process as making someone tap out—which is much harder in 2K24—it can be a challenging match.

Along with throwing people into the ambulance, the vehicle can come in handy in other ways. For example, you can throw people into or off of it. This is mainly what makes the match interesting, as it adds another element to your bouts. Also, the fact you can go backstage and use the ambulance in the parking lot to finish the match is a nice additional feature.

7Royal Rumble

Superstars wander out at regular intervals and attempt to throw their opponents out of the ring. The last person standing is the winner.

The Royal Rumble is arguably the most famous match type in WWE. Over the years, WWE games have regularly changed how these games work from a gameplay perspective. However, things haven’t really been switched up for 2K24. That said, the return of the ramp camera has elevated this match a bit since watching the wrestlers run down to the ring is a delight.

Regardless of the lack of changes to Royal Rumbles, they are still very fun and can be really surprising at times. After all, a Royal Rumble is one of only a few types of matches where being amongthe highest-rated superstars in the gamedoesn’t give you a significant advantage.

6Casket Match

It’s a one-on-one match where you have to place your opponent in the casket at ringside and close the lid.

WWE doesn’t often do Casket matches, so it’s surprising to see them return to the series. But it’s a good surprise, as it’s an enjoyable match type. The different methods of getting your opponent into the casket add some variety to each contest.

In addition, the fact that you can slam or throw someone on top of a closed casket is a nice touch, especially as the animations of them hitting the thing look great. It’s the most refined version of the match the series has ever had.

5Elimination Chamber

Six superstars enter a large structure. Four begin in pods, while the remaining two start the match. At regular intervals, the wrestlers come out of the pods and enter the match. The last person to be pinned or made to submit wins the contest.

Ever since it was created, the Elimination Chamber match has been exciting in both actual WWE and the games. Yet, there was a spell in the games where this match type really struggled to function.

Thankfully, recent entries have fixed those old issues, and now chamber matches are fun again. This trend continues in WWE 2K24. The game doesn’t change much about the match, as it seems pretty much identical to recent entries. The positive of this is that the developers haven’t screwed anything up. The chamber-specific entrances are still nice, it remains a pleasure to throw people into pods, and the survival element is still compelling.

4WarGames

A three-on-three or four-on-four match that takes place inside a cage that covers two rings. Participants enter the match at regular intervals. Once everyone is in, the first team to get a pinfall or submission wins.

WarGames was a significant new feature in WWE 2K23. As such, it isn’t too different in 2K24. However, it remains a pleasure to play. Part of its appeal is its uniqueness. No eliminations and not being able to win the match until everyone enters the contest makes it feel different from other matches.

For most of it, you aren’t looking to get pinfalls or avoid being pinned. You are just freely trying to beat on your opponents as much as possible. It presents a whole different dynamic to most matches.

People fight backstage, attempting to knock their opponent out.

Over the years, Backstage Brawls have steadily improved. The areas where you can fight have become bigger, and more interactive elements are being added each year.

In WWE 2K24, the match type got a big upgrade because it doesn’t only allow one-on-one fights anymore. you’re able to do tag brawls, triple threats, and fatal four-ways. Naturally, the more people included, the more chaos ensues—and these are pretty chaotic matches already. On top of that, it adds a bit of welcome variety to the match type.

Two people start in the ring. When one is pinned or made to submit, another person comes out to replace them. This continues until one person is left remaining.

Gauntlet matches have returned to the series for WWE 2K24. This makes sense since WWE has been having more Gauntlet matches on TV in recent years. They’ve always been fun to watch, and now they’re fun to play. After all, they allow you to have a series of great matches in a row.

Plus, they provide an interesting challenge to see if you can outlast all your opponents as you battle fatigue. How many opponents you need to face is up to you, as you can have anywhere between four and 30 wrestlers in one of these contests. Of course, you don’t have to face them all, as you can be the last entry and take advantage of a weakened opponent. So, there are plenty of options for this match type.

1Special Guest Referee

This is a one-on-one match with a special guest referee that can be controlled by either a human or AI.

Fans of the WWE 2K series have wanted to see the return of the Special Guest Referee match type for some time. Now, it’s back and better than ever. This match type has so many elements that make it good. For starters, playing as the referee is very enjoyable. The mechanics are easy to understand and work well, particularly the ability to switch between ref and wrestler mode, which makes things so much more straightforward than in the old games.

What’s also impressive is how much thought has gone into AI-controlled special guest referees. An AI special guest ref doesn’t just act like a regular ref. If they have allies in the match, they will favor them and perhaps even let them get away with illegal tactics. This adds an extra layer to what is alreadya pretty deep match type.
